Need a new game

So guys, I'm in a dilemma I'm sure most of you have been in at one time or another.
In short I need a fun but cheap game to kill time until some better titles come out on Xbox 360. Any suggestions? Oh yeh, I got a budget of about £15 and would prefer a DigiDownload if possible.

Cheers people

SotS off Steam. Great buy. Also, Fallout: Tactics.  It ultimately depends on what kind of game you're looking for.

Tons

What kind of game are you looking for exactly? What about specs?

At the moment I'd recommend:

Pathologic - Bleak survivalist horror from Russia. The basic schtick is you're visiting a village in the arse end of nowhere which ends up being quarrantined due to a mysterious plague outbreak. You get twelve days to discover the cure. What makes it particularly interesting is that the three different characters you can play all move through the same story but from their own perspective, so you will for example be arrested for unfathomable reasons as one character, only to find out why when you play through as another. It's ostensibly an FPS, although not combat oriented, and the sketchy translation runs from bat**** craziness to the amazingly poetic. RPS have a good breakdown here, though be warned it does contain some spoilers. Oh, and the game was made in 2005 so the graphics aren't top notch, but they are incredibly effective in terms of atmosphere.

AI War - Fleet Command An indie RTS in space with your opponent being one (or more) nefarious AI constructs. Multiplayer is co-op, basically you and your friends versus the massive AI empire. It uses some interesting mechanics to keep it interesting, for example how the AI responds to you is based on a threat level which increases when you attack systems, and decreases if you destroy certain structures. It therefore plays to take a strategic approach to the game and plan your raids and attacks with an eye on manipulating the AI to avoid having it crush you like a bug (I did mention it starts out controlling every system but the one you get, right?). Again, graphics are nothing fancy but then it is an indie game.

Gratuitous Space Battles - I've posted about it before. Another indie game, you get to design ships and pit them against opposing fleets. You can't control any of the ships in the battle, but you can set initial orders, formations and the like.

Far Cry 2 If you haven't got it yet, £13 from Impulse with the fortune DLC included. Free roaming FPS in Africa with slight literature pretensions. Amazing fire effects, good themes but definitely one of those games you'll either love or hate depending on how you approach it.

Warlords Battlecry III RTS. 2D graphics, similar to Warcraft 3 (although it predates it. In fact, Blizzard probably lifted half their stuff from it) except with persistent hero and more options regarding race, class and abilities than you can shake a very pointy stick at. Nice campaign method which basically lets you roam a map and take on the missions you want, there's some bollocks about a portal to hell or something offered up as a plot, but why bother when you can just go and slaughter the Lizardmen instead. Definitely worth while if you've ever played WC3 and wished it could be a little more complex.

Wow, they all sound great. Gonna go check out Warlords and Gratuitous Space Battles.

Cheers Arch

I can second Warlords, one of the best RTS series I've ever played.

To be honest though the translation of Pathalogic was a little too much for me, it was pretty terrible. Although I hear there's a fan based translation mod out there somewhere.

It's not too bad, it just takes persistence. And for every complete bunch of nonsense you get an unintentional(?) poetic phrase or two. I actually found myself enjoying the fact the translation is a bit out of whack; it adds to the surrealness.

Downloading Warlords now. £10 from D2D so that's pretty damn good if it's as good as you guys say.

For some reason I always liked WBCII more, III somehow lost a lot of the charm.

I always preferred III. But then I always loved tinkering with insane class / race combinations. And £10 from D2D? Did you miss the £5 from Impulse part?

Yeah, me too. The campaign especially was a lot more fun and gave you a lot more reasons to play than the WBCIII quest and there's also a fair few more campaigns out for it. Wish I still had my copy.

This.

Well I don't think I could type anything that would do that game justice, it's just brilliant, but..

Sure its pretty dated but you find yourself totally immersed in a believable near-future world, you have the dialogue and action choices similar to a fallout game, weapon upgrades, nano-cybernetic skills, a compelling story of conspiracy and corruption, and the game is not only one of the longest games I've played but also one of the few with an enormous amount of replay value, and I love it the whole way through. Every time.

A quick break down would be:
  • Great Background story.
  • Branching, intelligent and well written storyline where your actions actually matter and things aren't just black and white.
  • Open ended levels. No cattle run for you, actually think about where you're going and what entrance you'll take.
  • Fleshed out RPG FPS. Choose brute force, stealth, diplomacy or whatever mixture takes your fancy.
  • No "classes", choose nano augmentations and customise your weapons as you see fit.
  • Even without replaying the game with different choices you'll still get plenty of game time out of it.
  • Plenty of mods, including some graphics enhancement mods that help bring it up to date a bit.
  • Everyone but you has already played and loved it and will laugh at you if they find out you haven't.

I love every aspect of that but the FPS part, which is why I've never played it.
