Does anyone here speak nahuatl?

Because I'd really like to learn, if nothing else, the basics of it.

So, if anyone speaks it, perhaps they could describe to me the very basics of grammar, and perhaps some basic words?

Thank you in advance.

Please explain: geographical origins of the language; ethnicity of the language; basic concepts of grammar and syntax; why it is awesome.

hmm, interesting  but as Geoguð said, what's your purposes?  or is it a secret????

papalotl (butterfly), xotchill (Flor) xoxhipilly (little flower)

Spelling is probably wrong.

The type of yeast? Isn't that Spanish? Or do they have that in America too?

Naridill 说:
He, like the Spanish, needs allies in South America when he invades, and if the Nahua people have helped doing it before, they can do it again.

Oh I see  makes total sense now...

I don´t understand, is there a yeast called Xotchill?

Mexico isn't in South America. Learn some geography.

Geographical origins:

Central America/Latin America/whatever.

Ethnicity of language:

I have no idea what you mean.

Why is it awesome?

I don't know, I just think it sounds (and looks) awesome.

Why do I want to learn it?

Kinda why some people learn Russian, I think.

It sounds awesome.

I do know some words, but can't speak the thing.. it is almost an extinct language anyway, however I have heard it being spoken and even in Bernal Diaz's chronicles, he describes it as a beautiful and musical language.
here's a sample poem by Nezahualcoyotl, the poet-lord of Texcoco (sorry about the english translation, had to make it on-the fly so that you at least understood the words )

Spanish

Cantos de primavera

En la casa de las pinturas
comienza a cantar,
ensaya el canto,
derrama flores,
alegra el canto.

Resuena el canto,
los cascabeles se hacen oír,
a ellos responden
nuestras sonajas floridas.
Derrama flores,
alegra el canto.

Sobre las flores canta
el hermoso faisán,
su canto despliega
en el interior de las aguas.
A él responden
varios pájaros rojos,
el hermoso pájaro rojo
bellamente canta.

Libro de pinturas es tu corazón,
has venido a cantar,
haces resonar tus tambores,
tú eres el cantor.
En el interior de la casa de la primavera,
alegras a las gentes.

Tú sólo repartes
flores que embriagan,
flores preciosas.

Tú eres el cantor.
En el interior de la casa de la primavera,
alegras a las gentes.

English

Songs of spring

In the house of painings
start singing,
reherse the song,
pour flowers,
cheer the song.

The singing echoes,
the rattles can be heard,
to them they answer
our own flowery rattles.
pour flowers,
cheer the song.

On the flowers sings
the beautiful pheasant,
it's song spreads
inside the waters.
To him answer
several red birds,
the stunning red bird
sings beautifully.

A book of paintings is your heart,
you have come to sing,
you make the drums sound,
you are the singer.
Inside the house of spring,
you cheer the people.

You only give away
flowers that inhebriate,
precious flowers.

You are the singer.
Inside the house of spring,
you cheer the people.

Because it is one of the main languages of the world alongside with English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, etc.

Thanks Guspav!

Yeah, I know it's almost extinct, and that's one of the reasons I'd like to learn it.

Because it'd be a shame if it went extinct.

Really is a waste... That's why I want to learn Yiddish (An eastern European Jewish language) that is a mix of German, Hebrew and maybe a hint of russian and polish.

(Soz if this is a bit off-topic)

I'm trying to find out as much as I can about nahuatl from the book I'm reading.

It's got a great deal of (as far as I know) authentic nahuatl, I mean, the dude lived in Mexico for 12 years while writing it, 12 years spent researching history and languages, the ****er could hardly have gotten it wrong, eh?

But I can't learn a whole language off so little, dammit!

Here's a site with tons of words (http://www.tlahui.com/educa.htm), the translations are in spanish, sadly,  but you could translate from spanish to english, you'd just need to work a bit on that.
I do find nahuatl interesting, especially if you want to learn about mesoamerican cultures and such, plus you'd learn a language with a completely different logic, which usually leads to learning to think in a different, more open way.

Edit: Actually that same site, offers remote nahuatl courses to english and spanish speakers alike, but they do cost some money, you might want to check that out (http://www.tlahui.com/nahuatl/index.html).
