Whether you are looking for new styles of music, or just want to find more bands similar to ones you already listen to, this is the place to look. Figured this could be used so people do not have to make new threads every time they are looking for some sort of music. I'll update this post with lists of bands/artists from different genres to give starting places for people to look if its their first time delving into a specific genre. Ask away!

Not bad.

Last year Bryan Ferry released his Olympia album. Some of his best work. He's still got it!

Here's the first track (HD quality):

Could really use some recommendations for jazz. I can do either classic or neo swing. So far my two favorite artists/bands are Glenn Miller and BBVD, but I haven't had much luck expanding out from there. Cheers!

I'm not sure about the genre definitions, but here are some recommendations:

The Mills Brothers
Benny Goodman
Paul Desmond
David Brubeck

I personally love the type of Jazz from the 30ies, with simply a guitar, bass, clarinet and maybe one other insrtument. Like the songs playing in good old Mafia (the game).

As far as old jazz artists and such go:

Benny Goodman / Glenn Miller / Duke Ellington (aka the holy trio)
Original Dixieland Jazz Band (these ones are very good)
Jelly Roll Morton
Oscar Peterson
The Andrews Sisters
Woody Herman
Django Reinhardt (gipsy jazz, you could say this guy is responsible for most tracks in Mafia I)
Peggy Lee (who used to be a singer for Benny Goodman orchestra, but I will put her in as separate artist, cause she is awesome)
Al Jolson
Kay Kaiser orchestra
Jaroslav Ježek
Bing Crosby (although I dont like this particular one very much)
Fred Astaire (yes, he did singing too and he has marvellous voice)
Scott Joplin (not sure wheter ragtime fits into this list, but hey)
Jimmy Dorsey
George Gershwin (composer)
Irving Berlin (composer)

And shameless promotion of Czech Republic: OPSO (Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra) / Ondřej Havelka & his Melody Makers - todays bands dedicated to remaking the atmosphere of 30s, meaning you can get their record in top quality in a fashion a 30s band would do it.

Your signature suggests that you know what you're talking about.

I'll tr< those names I didn't know. Thanks!

If you want any more recommendations, TDM, I could give you some; I took a class on the history of jazz, so I know a little bit about it.

Well, isnt this the purpose of the thread? Go ahead, the more the better.

Anyhow, having by chance to catch a listen of Helen Forrest's voice, I've been listening to anything of hers non-stop. Absolutely gorgeous singing. Ralph Rainger also composed some pretty good stuff. Him and Helen made my favorite song actually, I Have Eyes:smile:
