Multiple items on one UV map

Sergeant at Arms
Hi there. I managed to make my first decent item of clothing in Wings 3D. When I UV mapped it, I tucked everything to one side so I could texture more models with that UV map later on - so I could have one UV map to texture 3 or 4 armours. This has been recommended a number of times, and since the thing I made is for a mod, I thought I should put it into practice. I've made the first armour and textured it. I then duplicated it, so I could make an identical armour but with a variation in colour. However, I don't know how to unfold this armour onto the existing UV map.

All help will be greatly appreciated.

You need to get your concepts/terminology straight:
A UV-map is not a texture.
If you want to use one model (mesh) with several textures (images), there is no need copy it or to UV-map it a second time.
Just import it again in brf-edit as a second instance and apply another texture.

What you are talking about is utilising one texture (image) for several meshes for efficient use of RAM. Very well. Import into Wings the previous image (with the outline of the UV-mapping, or simply a copy of your finished texture) and play with your new UV-pieces till you're happy.

Then Gimp/Photoshop/MS-Paint  the image and make a dds. I suggest you keep your layers and save in psd or whatever before flattening the image for export.

Wings can be rather confusing in its use of images, so you may have to try a few times until you get the hang of it.

Careful planning is the key to efficient use of texture-space.
A lot easier said than done.

Also, there is nothing preventing you from using the same texture for a multitude of models in the same texture-space.
(for example a blade image for use with several swords).

Hope this helps.

You could also go with a simple copy / paste with Paint.

here I take a worked texture I want from one sheet..

1-2.jpg

and then place it onto another

2-2.jpg

Just make sure that the background of the new sheet doesnt match the new texture, so its easy to place it correctly. you could always fill in the background of the new sheet with a new color temporarily to settle this.

for close proximity items or when using the cut/paste technique to fix position, that ends up covering up other textures, you want to open a tool that has transparency and level eraser options such as Gimp.

I hope this is helpful.

Any questions dont hesitate to PM.
