I think to say that I'm a terrible archer is a gross understatement.  I've got absolutely no idea what best practices successful Archers employ these days and in fact, I'd probably have a hard time shooting myself at this point.  having said that, I find archery to be my favorite combat style in Multiplayer despite how god awful I am at it.  This post is a request for some general tips..how do you hit stuff?  I understand the reticle and it's representation of accuracy but the rest eludes me. BTW, I wasn't able to find much by way of the search engine.  Help!!

Don't shoot shields. Thats as good advice as I can give

hah!  Thank you.  I was starting to think those were targets the enemy were nice enough to carry around for the benefit of my own practice.  Hehe, I kid

I guess I just need to practice and die a lot until I figure it out.  I don't remember this being as difficult in the first game.

release the shot when the aim is at its smallest,  try to aim ahead of the target-  aim where they are going to be, not where they are.  compensate for distance by aiming up (cant be taught this, you learn it with practice)  don't bother aiming at shields unless you are trying to keep their attention on you (IE: so your team can shoot them in the back, or sneak up on them)
horses are nice big targets, you can dehorse enemy cavalry fairly well.

your priorities are
-enemy archers/xbows
-enemy cavalry
-unshielded infantry
            - that are a direct threat to you
            - that are a direct threat to your team
            - the rest
-  if none of the above are available,  you can take potshots at shielded folk or relocate.

relocating is important,  enemy ranged troops can kill you easily if they know where you are, and you don't know where they are, you are also prone to being backstabbed.  unless you have adequate protection you should relocate a lot.

In my playstyle there are two main strategies.

1.  Sniper/assassin-  (saranids have great mobility so are good at this. Veigers have great power in a single shot, making assassination shots more viable)
you should flank as much as possible, using stealth to get to good vantage points-  constantly relocating after shooting,    the aim is to take down powerfull targets that pose a big threat to your team.  Patience is important,  you may have a clear shot on that dehorsed cavalryman-  but if you wait a moment you can kill a skilled crossbowman who will show himself from cover in a moment due to not seeing you.

Main points-
-take note of who the best players are on the other team-  take them out and your team will benefit.
-use stealth.  if the enemy doesn't know of your presence you will have a MASSIVE advantage,  players stay still a lot more often when they aren't feeling threatened.
-make the first shot count-  the first shot from your vantage point will likely blow your cover,  make it count, a headshot is 99% of the time an instakill.
-PATIENCE-  taking note of the above points,  bide your time.  if you will have a chance to headshot the enemy teams top player then take it,  don't be taking potshots at his team beforehand as he will be hard to hit if he knows where you are.

2. Support archers  (nord archers are good for this due to melee abilities, saranids also due to mobility)
you should move with the main infantry group,  at very least within line of sight.  when in combat you should hang back and give support where needed.
keep shielded players looking at you and distracted-  shoot unshielded players in the back as they fight.  your aim is not necessarily to make kills, but to keep the enemy dodging your shots and focused on you-  if they don't they die,  if they do they are at a disadvantage fighting your team.Main
one major advantage of this is your ability to get in close without the danger of being cut down,  this short distance gives you a better aim and greater power to your shots.

Main points-
-stay with the group. your infantry mates will keep you well protected from ambush,  you can allways move in parallel to them- say, along rooftops whilst they are on street level,  but don't stray too far.
-Watch your aim- you don't want to hit your own team,  spamming is bad in support archery-  only shoot where needed.
- its fine to shoot shielded enemies,  sure you don't hurt them-  but it forces them to face you whilst they fight,  if they turn their back shoot them-  your teammates will attempt to circle round them in order to force them to turn their back on you.
-interupt enemy attacks and blocks.  your shot will interupt your targets action-  if a player is proving troublesome you can time your shot so it stops his block, letting your teammate hit him, likely finishing him off.
- don't be scared to engage in melee,  if you are a good blocker you can usually just turtle away,  block each incoming attack in hope that your allies will step in.
sometimes a fight is simply too chaotic for you to take shots without the danger of hitting your team,  in such situations you can help turn the tide of the fight by going in melee,  remember your weapon and stats are weaker-  so play defensively,  focus on blocking before attacking.

Shoot where they're trying to go.
Remember to shoot a little higher than they are ( the further they are, the higher you aim ).
If they have shields, try to get on a flank and shoot ( remember point 1 ).
If you are crossbow, shoot, then get back to cover to reload. Don't stay in open field.
Remember that it takes time to switch from bow to melee, so if someone is getting near take weapon out before.
The rest is practice...

Watch your prey for a while, get a feel of his moves; how he strafes, retreats.
Fire a few arrows at him, see how he moves, how many steps to right, left, how he zigzags.
Now turn away from him, let him think he is untouchable.
And when he is busy with your teammates; hunt him; now you know him, you know where he will escape, how he will escape. He is yours, get his scalp, he will look great on your wall.

Ohhhh frubes. What he said.
Also bring along an army of friendly archers.
They help.

Try Crazy_Archers method, only take a bow and 3 sets of arrows, if you dont shoot and kill you opponent you die.

^^ that... you'll die alot for a few days then you'll get the hang of it... (I was talking about killing)

and for god sakes... the bush is your friend

I'll impart whatever advice I can offer. Most people have already stated most of what can be said, but I do have some other things to add.

-Start small, and gradually increase. This is true for almost all practices. When playing guitar, for example, you start slow, and then gradually increase speed until you have perfected it. Smaller distances will make it easier for you to hit your enemies, but do be wary, as you will need infantry guards around you. I'd recommend keeping with the bulk of players in this strategy.

-First person mode. Using first person mode has a more centered reticule, which will help ease your accuracy. Be careful though, you lose A LOT of peripheral vision doing this.

-Don't worry too much about K/D. For now, focus on trying to learn the capabilities of each bow. Learn their accuracies, ranges, arrow drop- this will help you a lot in the long run.

PS: if you want the love and admiration of your fellow teammates, shoot down the "lolspin" 2h spammers before they get into conflict. They make great targets, and you can possibly save your teammates a lot of grief.

Great advise from all.  Only thing to add is start an archery only character in SP.  This gives you plenty of oppurtunity to learn the strengths and weaknesses of being an archer.  You would be able to get far more practice with not being killed as often, potentially.

Thanks for everyone's great advice.

I've found my niche with Crossbows (they're easier than bows imo).  It's a difficult yet rewarding playstyle

Crossbowmen tend to be very well equipped for support, having shields and all but they can pull off assassinations well too. That is, at short range and with a powerful crossbow. As a crossbowman you may be better off rusing hostile archers than trying to outshoot them.
