MP3 integration

How hard is it to program a MP3 player into the game? I know I could open up my Sonique and just play the files, but it would be alot easier if it were built in. The thought of playing the Gladiator battle mp3 while charging the infantry with my sword and shield on my horse is very appealing

I want this. And if I don't get it, I'm going back to the search feature, and I'm going to get all the other topics it's mentioned in, and I'm going to post in them too!!! WA HAHAHAHAHAAHAHA!

I added several mp3s from the soundtracks of Conan The Barbarian and Flesh + Blood using the method outlined in the following thread.  It's very easy to do and you won't have the extra burden of an mp3 player running.

I've seen that. I'd rather have an ingame swap util. The thing is, I don't want the same stuff over and over, and I don't want to have to go out and edit every ime I want a new tune. Besides, you already have a an MP3 player running, you just don't have any control over it. You have an MP3 player running with the clunkiest song changer ever.

Why not just alt+tab to your winamp? ::\ Pretty much just as fast as pressing a key in the game imho... An mp3 player built into the game would still use PC resources, just like a separate program - this being the only reason I could come up with as to why someone would want a built-in one.. Not that I disagree with the idea, but I'm just oblivious, and therefore curious as to why spend time programming something in which already exists in a slightly different form?  Someone please enlighten me ::smile:

A couple of reasons.
1. The game's music is already in MP3 format, if another thread is to be beleived, so to oepn winamp would add stress to the system, but including an in-game mp3 menu wouldn't.
2. The game accepts alt-tabs, but isn't at all happy about them. They make the game a tad unstable on some occasions, and the game takes times to get back to 'ready.' It's not a horridly heavy game at present for those of us who have lower end systems, but it IS heavy enough.
3. So why add an MP3 player, those who didn't read item one will ask again, and the answer is that since we are already dedicating resources to the playing of MP3s, so all we need to add is a selection box. Same system stress as now, as opposed to a second MP3 player.... and much faster access then alt-tab.

Hitting escape or Q for quests, or some such, and having the ability to select an MP3 from a preselected music directory would be simple, and would not add stress to the system,

But wouldn't your system be using the resources from the game if your music is disabled? I mean you wouldn't be listening to TWO different sound-tracks at the same time right? Again I might be wrong but isn't system stress on MP3's based on the ammount of channels being used at any one time? Plus you would require CPU power to open the file from a directory, move it through ram and feed it to the sound card (to put it very bluntly) regardless of whether its a file launched by the game or by itself ::\

On the other hand, stability is a reasonable argument, since although seems to be fast and problem-less on both my meh-ish comp and my low-end laptop, theres bound to be people experiencing crashes through that I guess. But then wouldn't it be better to fix those? ::razz:

That depends on whether or not this game still loads the applocations into ram when music is disabled. Which I honestly don't know.

No one ever fixes all the crashes, and even if you did, people might have PCs which don't like alt-tabbing. Also, on many PCs, like mine, Alt Tabbing a big application is SLOW. It takes it about 45 seconds to be able to get to the desk top, and about a minute to get back to the game.

The game loads the application when music is disabled, since it still uses mp3 sounds (I think). Disabling sound all-together though will boost your performance, so it's not loaded then. What I meant though, is that you would still require more channels to be used and more files to be accessed if you have music turned on during game-play - similar to an external mp3.

Sorry about your alt+tabbing issue ::razz: I'm sure there are people with the same problem, but wouldn't you rather get it fixed on your comp? ::razz:

Anyway, like I said I'm not against the idea.. Was just wondering what your specific reasons where - sort of understand why you would want it now. Maybe if its easy to pop in, armagan will the next version, so keep hoping ::\

If I remember, you can specify music files to replace the ones used in-game.  Is this in the config file or is it somewhere else?  In any case, you can find the MP3s and move files renamed to same as a quick fix.

What about someone mod a simple application that edits the music.txt (or whatever) file and adds all the files in the /Music directory to the .txt file, and enables them in-game without too much trouble. I don't have any idea how, but I think it's possible.

Would solve it.

Yes, but I want to be able to TELL the game to play which file at which time.
