The Middle Guard
"Napoleon's Guard probably represent the last true link in a chain spanning the ages. "War's history tells of many elite guards which, in their times, formed living walls around their rulers' thrones. The Persian 'Immortals' had a support contingent of concubines... Israel's King David kept a bodyguard of Philistine mercenaries. Alexander the Great rode amid the nobly-born Royal Squadron of his Macedonian Companions, Rome's Praetorian cohorts. Unfortunately, are more remembered for betraying their Caesars than for guarding them, as are the Janissaries of the Ottoman sultans. Formed in 1506, the Pope's Swiss Guard still wears a version of the uniform designed by, tradition says, Michelangelo. The 'Maison du Roi' of France's Bourbon kings included Swiss and French guards. When the Revolution flared, the French guard mutined. The Swiss died fighting for a king who abandoned them. None of these looms so formidably large across our memories of old wars as Napoleon's Imperial Guard. Its history is short, barely 15 years in all, but these were mighty years of amazing triumph and defeat; defeat from which it still wrung a foeman's tribute to its valour and devotion. With its Emperor it stands among the mightiest of great conquerors and great conquered."
The Regiment
From the Nouveau Garde comes its finely-aged replacement. The Moyenne Garde prides itself on the age and experience of its members, and has taken up the mantle of the name Moyenne Garde through a long-running history with the BG and MOV Napoleonic Wars communities. Forming from returning members after many a long hiatus, the MG attempts to rekindle some aspect of the good old days, and represent both the top notch banter and disciplined play that seems to be lost in the current state of Oceania's Napoleonic Wars scene. This is a new reg formed by some of the oldest members of the community, who have been playing and improving at the game for years. We are looking to create an effective, but fun team of some of Australia's finest NW players. Either skill at commanding, shooting or melee will be strongly encouraged and tested if you choose to join us and participate carrying the proud name of the regiment. Prove to be intelligent and mature, and you'll find your time with the regiment to be satisfying - that much can be guaranteed. We aim to ensure fun above all else, and will be organizing events for other games to ensure the NW experience doesn't get too stale. With the current state of Australian NW communities, huge reg numbers and LBs aren't to be expected, but with the possibility of a community revival in the future, we'd love to have you with us as we once again set a high standard for play and bants in Oceanic Line Battles.
