When you first start the game the "Trainer of Zendar" teaches you how to fight on foot. But nobody teaches you how to fight on horseback. I think there should be another trainer for mounted combat, perhaps standing next to the stables.
He could tell you what to do (eg, look left to swing left etc) and then put you in a training area with a saddle horse. There could be one of those targets with a shield at one end and a ball on a chain at the other end, that swings round when you hit it. You could have to hit it a set number of times, with different weapons such as swords and lances, in order to pass. You could also have to beat someone in a one on one mounted duel to proove you are good enough for the tournaments and the world.

I like training. And the dummies you suggested would be great, if possible. You'd have to strike and quickly pull up your shield beore the ball hits you. :)

EDIT: And he could teach you horse archery as well maybe. Ride past a serie of targets (or maybe dummies) and shoot 'em. :D

I agree with Ingo, you can simply go to the arena and, if you're a cheapskate like me, not bet anything. This way you don't lose any money if you lose, and you can train with a variety of things. Much fun :)

I just thought it odd that in a game called Mount and Blade, you are not taught how to use a blade while on a mount. Are you expected to work it out by yourself? The first time I rode a horse was in the melee arena and I spent most of the fight crashing into walls and failing to hit the enemy.

Mounted combat is far superior to on foot namely because of the speed advantage. Although i don't know if anyone else has found that once you find a particular fighting style you stick with it. I have two forms one hander and shield with bow, and again one hander and shield, two handed swords and a throwing weapon.

Don't know if anyone else has found it difficult to get the hang of polearms. Yes the have a great range adnvantage but in order to do any damage you have to aim where your enemy will be when you follow through with the power part of your attack. As such a lance or spear that can only do decent damage with good speed, no match for the slightly shorter reach but far faster swing of a two handed sword like the Swadian Knights.

You can, and have. Many others have too. A few questions:

Does the arena explain how to use a horse?

Will everyone new to the game learn how to use horses with the ease you did?

Will it take anything away from the game through the addition of a horse trainer? i.e. would it be better to not have a horse trainer?

Obviously it won't help most people who have managed to get decent horse skills, experience is a good enough teacher. But the point isn't to introduce changes to assist experienced players! The point is to add something that makes sense to be there.

Just because it isn't functional to you, doesn't mean something isn't worth adding. True, there are other ways of going about something, but a change of this nature adds more to a game than simply teaching someone how to learn to ride a horse. It adds to the gaming experience.

Besides, there is also the possibility that there are techniques to learn from the trainer that experience alone will not teach you :)

Like how to use a lance. Could somebody PLEASE explain that to me? It wouldn't hurt to put a crosshair on the lances either...

Wait, i have it somewhere around...

Aha, here it is.
