Mountain passes

This idea I have is to make mountains like a long, narrow passageway shape kind of 'battlefield' when you enter them, and you have to travel through the mountain 'pass' if you dont want to take the time to go around it. This area should be thick with snow, making it difficult to see, and if you dont be careful you could get jumped by bandit's lying in wait for innocent passerby or fall into a hole or a crevice. What do you guys think? Any comments, anything to add?

I think the area between rivacheg and reyvadin should be an actual narrow mountain pass, able to be completely blocked off by three parties standing abreast. And yeah, when fighting a battle there, the random terain should look like a large valley.

I guess what Im saying is... If we are ever able to go across mountains, we should at least be given a hard time doing it.

Also, caravans crossing through passes would pay extra because it would be pretty dangerous.

I not exactly sure what dac fac is saying, but what i infer is that we must not only to move the party through the mountain, but actually to walk it. So when entering the mountain terrain, it goes into battle mode (even if no enemies) and you got to treverse it yourself. Then we'll get the ' thick with snow, making it difficult to see, and if you dont be careful you could get jumped by bandit's lying in wait for innocent passerby or fall into a hole or a crevice' idea.
Is that what you're saying? I think looks interesting if it is. After all, travelling in M&B seems really easy from a godlike view in the sky. Not to mention sometimes really boring waiting for the party to reach the town.

Yes, no name, you got it perfectly. Thank you for making it more clear for people... If they think its more clear. But really, thats exactly what I was thinking of.

That would be one of those things that is neat first time, but annoying all successive times.

Ingo here is right. If you're playing a footbound character, this will cerainly be the case. And chosing if you want to play in battlemode would result in nearly everyone staying in the "god mode", because it's faster.

Even more of a reason to buy a horse... But if you are footbound, why not just go around? My idea is more of a realism factor than a fun one. Im not really a big supporter of the strategic map(world map) in the first place...

I think it could be interesting if it were a battle map, rather than just some terrain you have to traverse. E.g., you have to lead your troops on an assault against the bandit stronghold, and the only approach is a narrow mountain pass leading up to a cave or something. It would be pretty intense too, since you just know they'd be standing on the nearby ridges throwing javelins and axes down at you.

Actually, now that I think about it, I could also see this as something that might take you from one major area of the map to another. E.g., right now the map is surrounted by impassable mountains on three sides and the ocean on another. If you wanted to expand that map, you could put a mountain pass somewhere around there leading to a different region, where there might be new goods for trade or new units for hire. It would also make a good place to encounter new NPCs, and yes, a good place to be ambushed by bandits on occasion.

But please, no hidden crevasses for people to fall to their deaths in. Assuming you have a train of soldiers on foot and on horseback behind you, I can just see them all plunging lemming-like to their deaths in their efforts to pathfind their way to your location.

Sounds good but how about make the battle map match the world map like Total War series does it first?

Then throw in the passes, snow, and deserts.
