Mount to foot

I know when I address the community there are a good number of infantry players out there but I thought I should report how effective my new army has been.

I'm sorry if this has already been stated but I have been trying to find an army which is cheaper to maintain tough and not based on a core of h cav.

I tried a combination of cav and vaegir archers - ok - the archers slow you down and need babysitting.

I tried sergeant and crossbowmen - not bad -  but slow and very static.

Then I tried huscarls! Woo!
I knew they were good but in numbers they are awesome.

I have now become addicted - I roll with 100 - they aren't slow and with supervision they have a capable ranged ability. They will take losses against good opponents but nothing terrible even against h cav. I have now taken to being a member in the sheild wall!

All this from a guy who plays near pure Swadian!

yeah tell them to hold position and stand closer like 4-5 times and they become able to prevent cavalry runnning thru them, so once all the cavalry have arrived you can tell them to charge for a bit, but then you might want to have to regroup again.

Huscarls are forever the way to go if you aren't using cavalry in numbers.

i've been branching out into rhodoks but they are indeed more difficult to maintain and command - still, challenge is fun.

Hello Phossy - I love your comments.

Was the last one a declaration of love for Huscarls or a comment on life generally?

He he

Wonder if the thread should have been foot to mount - ie give dobbin the boot?

Nah - dear ole dobbin

Does anyone happen to know why you loose one or two huscarls in a battle?  I figured it must be a helluvva fight yet in all the battles I've been in with my new model army I have never seen a single huscarl die only seen the text line reporting it - I have taken to skirting the edge of my shield wall and patrolling for any huscs in trouble and helping. The buggers are so tough they get knocked down by three guys then get back up and kill em all - or get helped out by their friends.

Do any of you husc users use stand ground over hold ground cos I like the idea of the guys looking after themselves but they sometimes run off and become vulnerable on their own

Certainly a huscarl fan. In fact, my character is a huscarl-gone-Lord =)

I like to stack them close together (stand ground, stand closer) and them unleash Hell on Earth when the suckers come close enough for a charge.

As for them not dying: Only Odin knows when it's time for a huscarl to go to Valhalla!

Your particular set of huscarls might be weaker than expected thanks to the random stat distribution given to troops. You can check this by choosing "Talk" while selecting one in the Party screen, then asking more about them. In my Swadian game, my Swadian Man-at-arms have a pitiful 10 strength. 10! And low ironflesh too, so that they only have 48 HP in total, making them more vulnerable than one would expect.

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARR!!!

In case anyone was wondering, this is considered spam. I'm probably going to get banned now, but I just thought I'd let this serve as a warning to everyone else who might be a Huscarl fan and occasionally feel the need to let rip a battle cry.

See you around.

RRRAAAAAGGHH!

I just love the way they hold the shield wall and come to each others aid - wouldn't catch knights doin that. They are soooo hard they mulch anything less than toptier in a couple of hits.

They do all look alike but if I want their attention I just shout Odin and they all buck right up.

Though Jim Huscarl is a little hard of hearing ( what with the terrible throwing axe ax-ident)

banning people for their love of huscarls... where did the world go...

ax-ident :3  I love it.

Also, you should try boosting the ammo in throwing axes. It's so troll watching melee enemies run towards your shield wall then get pasted by 50-100 throwing axe volleys. Makes me feel warm inside.

That does give you a warm fuzzy feeling, doesn't it? =)  I can't imagine with the range of throwing weapons that there would be time to throw more than the 4-5 there's in a stack? If it's just waiting for the incoming charge I think that's all they would have time to launch.

Thought it was to do with the encumberance ( to use a mb term ) ie how much can a warrior hold before his combat efficiency starts to drop.

I'd tweak the figures but you can easily overpower an already strong unit.

When do you guys let your Carls fire - from the start or hold til close?

Btw - Jarl/Carl are AngloSaxon words that have created the name Charles and the title Earl in the English language.

I thought they were all the same on the battlefield until I saw some had Great Axes among the majority.
