I'm just starting work on a post-apocalyptic themed mod. It's set in modern times, and will have zombies.

What I'm hoping to do is make a survival horror game with mechanics I believe to be completely underrepresented in the genre, in that the elements of actual survival will be present and semi-realistic. Gasoline will be used as a currency, food will be scarce and essential, companions will be hard to come by and thieves will be a constant threat.

The factions will represent several parts of the civilian population and the military. Civilians will likely be formed into militias, bandit-like marauders, and those trying to restore the status quo of civilisation (or pretend that civilisation still exists). The military squads will be powerhouses that need to be avoided or outsmarted at all costs, and will probably consist of the army, or biohazard containment teams. Of course, there will also be the infected. The infected will represent a number of different horror movie cliches, some of which being classic slow zombies, "rage virus" zombies, infected animals, and perhaps some rare and powerful boss monsters.

Equipment will mostly consist of clothing of various encumbrances and strengths, and any found/bartered/stolen military gear. Flak jackets and the like may prove worth the weight when fighting other humans, since modern firearms will be common. Weapons will include pistols, assault rifles, shotguns, scoped rifles, machetes, and many makeshift weapons. Ideally, weapon proficiencies will be tuned to allow specialisation with any of these.

The player's party will be kept very small, and it will be hard to convince companions to come with you, so you will need to choose carefully among the familiar faces (Jim, Claire, Louis...) Those wanting to fight in a larger group can join one of the civilian militias or the military, with eligibility based on your character's custom backstory.

As for the "mount" part, there may be horses, but more likely there will be dirt-bikes! They will be very fast and powerful, but they'll have to be, to make you want to spend precious gasoline just operating them. Hopefully they should add some flavour to city street battles.

I'm quite excited about making this. If you have any questions/comments/criticisms please post them here. I have exams and 2 part time jobs to worry about right now so things will be slow at first, plus I'm brand new at this, but I'll try to give verbal updates on progress as it happens.

Well, good luck I suppose. This has been tried at least three times before, with no success.

Also, a recommendation for the companions: Bill, Louis, Francis, and Zoey. For old times sake

Sounds interesting.
Best of luck to you.
Although If I remember correctly I believe Zombie mods have history of not comming out so well.

Yikes. Well for what it's worth I'm a computer science major so I find coding in Python a breeze. I think its success will just come down to free time and finding people to help with the models and sound.

Any resemblance the companions may or may not have to characters in similarly themed movies or games is purely coincidental. It's funny you mention those 4 names though as they are in fact on my list.

Well, for what it's worth, you seem more... mature, and dedicated, than your average thirteen-year-old who attempts to make a zombie mod. So, I assume the slower, cliche'd zombies will be using the model used in Chronicles of Talera, and the faster zombies somewhat bloodied, crazy-eyed son-*****es?

And I claim shenanigans on you, good sir

Good luck and a word of warning there is only one acceptable version of a "zombie" and that is that of the old days, the slow moving brain eating kind.

Any reference to some running mother****er as a zombie and i will personally hunt down the one responsible and scoop his/her brains out with my trusty old spoon.

Anyways, for the dead-er zombies, I recommend making some sort of armor/clothing piece that weighs a rediculous amount, so then they walk slower, and thus, slow zombies.

good idea

Hm, looks vairy eenteresting, indeed.

Will there be mad scientists and stuff? For that matter, can the player become a mad scientist?

Hmm...

MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAhahahahahahahahahahaaaa...haha...ha?

..And here comes Teshin with some super-awesome zombie faces!

--Rage virus zombie (Look at his eyes! Look at them!)

PS: I hope you can use them in your mod .....Why not?

Lovely faces Teshin. I might use them in my personal mod.

I like your mod idea. I have planned for 3 months now on how to make a zombie mod.
I planned to make it in urban enviroment but my modding skills overall sucks unfortunatley. Other wise I would be honured to help out.
But as for now I'm more pain then gain. However, I can help with map making and scene making.
