You can join the faction of your choice just fine.  Of course, they might just screw you over.

2. Can i capture nobles yet or will they always manage to escape

3. can i manage castles yet [nope] got my first castle, you can however manage villages, but the buildings are kind of lame (fish pond increases prosperity by 5%? why?)

4. can i attack cities yet
