anyone know if it will ever happen? If it did, I belive we would have the best online duel game ever. agreed?

search button is your friend.

latest word is that this will not happen in M&B 1, but possibly the sequel.

agreed.. iv been playing ultima online for 7+ years now.. currently on free shards but this is the best game iv played since then.. making it online would be an even better gaming experiance.

betterNights, its not like he can only softcode his engine you know. He did make it and im sure writing a bit of net code isnt all that tricky, its mainly just sending position/status data to and from client/server. In comparison to other stuff thats in the engine its not the hardest thing armagen has to do.

But im quite happy with singleplayer and would prefer more single player updates than less updates with multiplayer

Making a game online is a bit more then just 'tricky'. Check out http://www.ongamedev.com/ and search through their forums about how many people would like to make an mmorpg but cant.

Making a game online is a nice magnificent feat believe me. If this were to go online, Im sure that it would be bugged out the behind for a long while as are most games that move online. Would be a neat feature, but would be hard to implement imho.

Now, if armagen has done networking code before, and has released a few other online games, or other staff has created some online games, well then the chances of failure arent as high as other people who have tried. Just my two cents, worth so much yeh?

dosent have to be mmo does it

MMORPG or MORPG makes no difference. The point I was trying to make was that networking code is more difficult then it was made out to be. Its hundreds of extra lines of code just to get the basic framework completed, not to mention just to get a few people onto the game.

Look around for an opensource chat program, and check out their coding. Its HUGE. And thats just for CHAT. Let alone for graphics, saving locations, updating worlds, combat, trade, etc etc. Its a huge feat for a game to become online. Even if its for one or two or a hundred people.

I just implemented a Flash/Java avatar chat in 272 lines of code.

Java is pretty easy with its sockets.

Its the bare minimum you'd want, doesn't even support smilies.

But yes, putting this game online, without planning for it would be a major headache. A one on one deathmatch style thing would be easier, but still if the code wasn't planned for it, it would be extremely hard.
I'd much rather see a year of game development then a year just to get the program to run over TCP/UDP

It seems to me that it is a logical and most prudent approach Armagan has taken here. Perfect and get to know the game first time round. That way he will know the possible glitches and so on, then build on that to get MP into it the next time.

Im not to privy with Java, but I know that C++ asks for a lot more coding. Requiring all the sockets information and whatnot. Im sure though, there are libraries out in the net that would simplify this procedure, but using someone elses work isnt always recommended.

Im not trying to sound like a networking know-it-all or anything which Im sure it sounds like I am, but moving online is an extremely HUGE step forward.

With it comes all the script kiddies who hack up the server, lag it down. Got the 12 year olds who come in with their awesome egos and l33t names. People will spam up the forums with the most pointless of babble. And thats just merely the beginning.

IMHO, as a gamer, this game isnt even 25% ready for online gameplay.

From the stickied FAQ:

13. Will we have multiplayer?
99.9% that you will have to wait for M&B2 for that feature.

Well there you have it. Maybe by the time M&B2 is released, gameplay will be WAAAAAY up there moreso then it already is.
