Mount & Blade on The Escapist!

Wow, Peter Parrish has certainly followed the progress of M&B - In depth knowledge of the earliest stages...
But you're right, the focus is on mods, the ingenious horseback riding and free roaming gameplay:

"This, surely, is what the next wave of "sandbox" titles should be aiming for"  (what wave?  )

One thing they don't get enough kudos for is just how good the combat 'feels'.

I think his comparing it to elite was great, and hes right, I haven't had this much fun playing a game since I played the original elite.

Funny thing is 25 years later, people still talk about elite as a benchmark type of game, and yet so few game companies try to emulate which is really not that difficult a concept.

Hello .. I've been lurking here for ages, but thought I may as well sign up and comment, since I wrote this article.

Glad it's going down quite well on here - as you can no doubt tell, I'm a pretty big fan of the game (and what it represents in terms of design). Apologies for not spending more time on the combat and so on, but as has been rightly pointed out, this was a piece with quite a mod-heavy focus, in-keeping with the issue's theme of 'outside the box.'

I'm hoping there will be one!

 For a moment I thought Yahtzee made a killer review and defiled my favourite game.

Well written, thanks mr. Parrish!

Actually, I really would like to hear Yahtzee's opinion on this, especially comparing this to, say, Oblivion or such.

He would bash the game because that's funny and that's how he does comedy, regardless of the quality of the game.

Hmm. Not sure what Yahtzee would think about it~

He liked Stalker CS so I guess maybe could like it..

While you might think Yahtzee only bashes the games he reviews, the sad fact is that many of the games he has covered recently range from mediocre to abysmal, and the problems he points out are all too true, although conveyed in a humorous nature and sometimes exaggerated. There are a small number of games he truly likes (such as Saints Row 2); he also implicitly praises certain games in passing when discussing how badly a new game handles certain elements (such as his Fallout 3 review, where he states "The Thief series are the only games that have done stealth well"; he also mentions Thief in his scathing Oblivion review while talking about immersion).

If faced with Mount&Blade, I expect Yahtzee would make some initial comments about how old the graphics look and how there is no plot or any real point to the game, but then get caught up in the epic, bloody battles the game makes possible; as he said in the Saints Row 2 video, he doesn't mind if games focus heavily on violence as long as he has fun while doing it. I doubt he would ever review it, however; on more than one occasion he has mentioned that new releases keep piling up faster than he can get through them, and viewer requests are certainly going to be far more numerous for so-called "AAA" games.

I dont' think so.

The problem is he just doesn't like RPG's much, over all I find his reviews pretty good except for RPG's.

That was a very nice review. I love articles that praise M&B's modders.

BTW, Llew2, you are now officially a modder that mods with
near obsessive levels of detail

Opinions.

Also, I'm not saying he's a bad reviewer or anything, in fact I usually watch his videos, but hearing him say good stuff about a game while talking really fast is probably less fun than hearing him bashing a game talking really fast, so that's what he does.

I watch Yahtzee for the lols, not because I actually value his opinion. He plays most games for about five seconds, he is popular, and therefore needs to get through a lot of them. That means he doesn't have time to explore games like oblivion, or MMORPGs properly, and can't give a balanced opinion of them.

His review of EvE online was laughably bad, and had it not been for the funny geek references, I honestly would have just been sitting there facepalming.

Exactly. I don't really value his opinion too much, I just laugh at the jokes and stuff.
Serious or not, it's obvious he plays the games he revious for 1 or 2 hours tops.

As a retired BoB member from EvE (got bored of it finally) I think for the basic game he was pretty spot on.  Even some of the corp stuff was pretty spot on.  About the only thing he was wrong about was how easy it is to get away from rats in combat, silly noob that he was.

Nice review, a plug for Calradia At War, and I liked the comment about a 'proper' A Song Of Ice And Fire mod.
