Compared to the screenshots Taleworlds has on the main website, these are ugly as ****.
The main menu (Probably a placeholder) is ugly.
I think and i hope these are early alpha.

The date at the top says January 23rd, 2015. But it's still is in alpha, so who knows.

Things tend to look like that in test levels as well as with placeholder assets and menus. That looked like it had no anti aliasing, no lighting effects in the level and no post processing. These things are often what make a game look good, in a test level they are not present as they were not testing graphics.

And you sir are why we can't have nice things, I mean no offense but this is the reaction taleworlds are afraid of...

Btw - The pictures seemed to lack
Ultra settings, you're right other pictures seemed to have higher resolutions textures.
Post Processing
Lighting - KInda foggy...
Anti Aliasing - That setting that tanks framerates and makes objects look like 3d objects instead of 2d objects with screen tearing.

You're overreacting.

You think?

The reason they look ugly as balls is because the game looks far from finished, in my humble opinion. Let's give 'em some time to polish things a bit before we bash it too much.

Oh no worry.
I know these are work in progress.
M&B 1 alpha/beta was ugly as **** too.

I know they will deliver.

And those battles seem to lack the actual terrain. Yes i know it's a test.

I'm known for that, I'm an emotional creature.

Oh, man.  :???:
I'm guessing all those spears we see are not throwing spears.
Why are the warriors holding their spears for an overhead attack ?
Discuss.

Here's some theories.
1; Maybe spears can only do an overhead attack with a shield, since its far more precise than aimlessly stabbing at the gut. If this is the case, A greek Phalanx will be much easier to create in a total conversion mod.

2; maybe they're Placeholder, maybe they plan to have 2 sided spears like the Ancient Greek Dory.

3; Maybe they are throwing spears, just no other spears are thing to carry them are in the game yet.

4; Maybe you can throw your own weapons?

M&B 1's beta looked exactly the way the release versions did. The major difference was between 0.751 and 0.808 where the latter included a great many items and scripts. But graphically it was the same.

I hope the screenshots are from an old version. If it's still in early alpha we can start to talk about 2016 release.

I noticed in one of the screenshots something about "temperature". Those that mean that seasons are going to affect our troops? Also the battle looks huge, compared to Warband:Native.

The Byzantines and Sassanids had plenty of chances to take on the rashidun caliphs (whose soldiers were armed very similarly to the Byzantine ones from very early on, mind you
That's not true.
The Caliphate armies were mostly composed of Light Infantry and Light Cavalry, whereas the Byzantines and Sassanids had that, plus Catarphracts, War Elephants, Heavy Infantry, and generally better equipment.  Both empires had centuries of large scale warfare experience, as well.

The eastern romans didn't use war elephants, their infantry were mostly auxiliaries hired case-by-case from europe (the later crusaders were one of these auxiliary groups), and cataphracts were of limited use against raiders.
The sassanids were similar; their armies had been whittled down after almost a century of war, and by the time the rashidun arrived there was almost nothing left besides mercenaries and auxiliaries, who had a tendency to flee the battle the minute it wasn't going their way.
Sassanids used War Elephants.
And I'd like a source that their armies being composed mainly of Levies or Mercenaries, because what I read says otherwise.
During a military campaign the standing units could be further augmented by paid mercenaries, such as Christian Arabs, in particular the Ghassanid tribe, Persian heavy cavalry cataphracts, Gothic heavy cavalry, the precursors of Western European knights, and Slavic infantry.
The East Roman army had the two basic divisions of cavalry and infantry. The infantry fell into two main categories, the skutatoi and psiloi. The skutatoi were the front line infantry. These troops were armed with spear, long or short sword, and axe. Defensively they carried a circular or oval shield, wore chainmail or padded leather shirts, and a segmented helm, often with a crest, to identify their unit. The psiloi were the missile troops, armed with javelin and most importantly composite shortbow, their armor being the same or slightly less than the skutatoi.
The East Roman cavalry was based on the cataphract, a cavalry type originating in Persia and nearly as old as that civilization. The cataphract would be armored in the same fashion as the skutatoi, save that some cataphracts also wore a chestpiece of lamellar armor, small square or rectangular iron plates sown onto a leather backing, and they replaced the larger oval or circular shields with a small circular target shield, often attached to the left arm.

Significantly Outnumbered, Under-Equipped, and inexperienced, anyone can see how the Caliphate armies were in a severe disadvantage.

Or maybe you can switch your type of attack between overhead and normal attack like you switch between polearm/twohander fighting style with long axe in Warband?

Blocking Spear thrusts with a sword was the dumbest thing in M&B1, I understand it's for gameplay reasons, though. If they are giving the Spear different kinds of thrusts (Over head and middle thrusts) so that blocking it would be tricky, then that would be a most welcome change.

Lol, those quotes confirm what i said about byzantine armies. Read a description of the rashidun armies at yarmouk; the equipment and armour is mostly the same.

The shaders look very similar to the ones in warband, if only slightly stonger. The static shadows are more detailed but there are always graphics sliders if it worries you.

According to devs

-Screenies look quite new but some functions are seemingly not working and graphics are at low.

-They are invstigating how they are leaked.
