Mount&Blade II: Bannerlord Developer Blog 5 - Virtual Skeletons

Happy Friday to avid readers and passers by. It has been a little while since our last Bannerlord Blog. In this entry we are once more decreasing the number of unblogged rooms in the office by one. Although some animations are made and polished in various parts of the office, many are captured in our very own motion capture studio near the main door of our offices. The animation hub and thus the associated blog room for this episode.

I'm going to come work for you one day TaleWorlds. I'm studying really hard to become the ultimate 3D artist. The problem is that I live in Sweden and TaleWorlds's HQ is in Turkey?
That is quite the move, and enviromental change. TaleWorlds will probably not be hiring anymore in like 2 years, when I'm done with my Education.
TaleWorlds has grown large...

And that was taken in 2013. That is like 50 people.

Mount and Blade is my all time favorit game. Imagen if you could help developing your favorit game.

Anyways. Those grapichs looks so good. I can't even tell if it's photorealistic textures or hand painted texures. Is it both?
Keep up the good work!

See ya in Turkey!

Captain Lust seems to be adopted the environment(soon he will become a Ankara Bebesi), if he did I think you can do too.

ok then   i wanted to be in topic.

Things i would like to see in game. A decent diplomacy system with quite many otptions. marriage of a foreign princess, gifts, blackmail, inspiring fear etc. cities that actually differ, especially if we are talking about different factions/countries. the cultural element should also be clear in the eqipment, armor, clothes etc. you should also be treated by the npcs according to your social status and personal relationship with each group. interesting quests, and interactive ones if possible like that prisoner you had to escort, who you could decide to handle, kill or even  to include in your party if you wanted in the end. in battle, i would like to see an rts element. to be able (if you lead the specific army) to be able to get in rts mode for an instant and choose with mouse selection the troops you want, name them with number 1,2,3 for example, and give them the orders you want, seperate for each group (beyond the simple "knights", "archers" etc selection). the thing someone said about not making the troops move creepily simultaneously is a nice addition too. you should also be able to handle each warrior's equipment and training individually. some basic formations and prefixed strategic choices would be welcome too. make the auto-fight mode more effective if i have a really strong army. give importance to the role of the difference classes and troops, so that strategic choices really matter and can make the difference. (all the above if actually matter in battle there should be a quite sophisticated/well-made balancing of the factors with some complex formulas to bring the strategic element to a new level). in terms of physics i dont want very realistic ones. if i have a superstrong character, i would like to make the enemies catapult or spin a bit with my hits (good old kratos), cause who actually wants to slash a horseman and see him boringly and souleslly slowly drop down instead of doing cool midair spins? (ahh good old mnb..). some crafting systems wouldnt be bad either. making your own banner could be a cool option. in terms of character development i would like to feel the actual leveling up of the character, especially if it is a big level gap we r talking about, in terms of skills (social, strategic, battle), agility, strength etc. (not anything too inhuman, unrealistic though). the sieges should have a variety of options including, siege machines, inside treason, sending spies etc. if there where also universities where you could get doctors, mechanics, diplomats or spies it would be cool. finally it wouldnt be half bad for me to see a japanese like race. we had mongolian till now, but you know its nothing close. (which makes me think should there be naval faction and islands and pirates too? (maybe im asking for too much though ))

cool possible additions: drunk men challenging you to fist fights in taverns. (i dont know about prostitute system that some suggest, maybe it is too far fetched). being able to get actual jobs in the big cities. the business systems developed in mnb before that allowed you to open various kinds of enterprises, to be perfected. being able to start your own gang, faction, bountyhunter team etc. the concept art in that brownish old paper style was really cool. we hope it continues. also creating your own brand new troop class f.e. "deathknights", with special equipment and weapons. (to be able to craft or give to crafters their (and your's) weapons, equipment , change their colour, appearence etc..)

whatever you do, take ALL THE TIME YOU WANT as some suggested. we better wait than have a crappy result.

Well, the good news is that people definitely have different constitutions. Some are fat, but some are thin enough to share their stool with someone else.

Yeah, that is awesome. Thin, fat, big, small and other. Wander if I'll be able to enlarge boobs.

I'm sick of the waiting, you better hand out a new devblog fast or i'll never buy your games again.
Be patient you brat. Don't rush them.

Yeah, yeah... don't let's rush them! If we do so, we gonna be iritated with bugs, and have to wait for paths. I don't want to buy ****ed up game.

I knew it would be atleast one of you people who would get pissed

Good to see idle animations, sitting, drinking, stretching, etc, that is one of the weakest points of the current game that's non combat related and at least goes some way towards a more "living world"which at the moment is totally lacking. Now they need to add some other scripted stuff to NPC's so they are also doing some tasks in the exterior world and not just walking in loops which again is a real weak point in the game, the fact that dozens of towns and villages are dead in terms of immersion and are never visited.

You perv, anyways the tavern looks awesome.

It would look better with a lady ready to get laid for 300 denars. Aren't You guys in the mood for warm meal, bed and woman after tiring batlle or long way from Ihamur to Praven?

Sad, but true

...I don't think he could actually draw his sword from its position on his back. Maybe if the sheath had a cut going down the side so that he could pull if out... with a clip at the top to keep it in?
Bah.

...I'd rather the women were kept as they were than shown off as sex objects. Suppose that's just my opinion, though. I (mildly) doubt that TaleWorlds would do that anyways.

I agree. I recognize that a TW artist worked to make that scabbard, but having it slung across the back is historically inaccurate for a quick draw.
A sword too long to draw from the hip or back with one arm must be gripped by the blade and removed with two arms.

Just keep that in mind. People didn't carry swords that they couldn't draw in one motion, just for going into town. Swords of over 1 meter blade length were worn when they knew that they were going to fight well in advance, in which case they'd already have their large sword drawn.

coolness, fun game play and well balanced game systems are far more important that such minor details. if we hear medieval history nerds and perfectionists the game would result in a big boring potato. i can already see the character feeling heavy and moving slower than a turtle. these are not what made mnb fun though. you can never satisfy everyone, but i think the devs should not choose the extremely realistic path. i don't care to see realistic horse animations and such as some claim. only fun gameplay with good core elements and well balanced features.

Something that I really liked in that tavern, that not everyone has noticed because they were too amused with the new animations  (I was too), are those new cloth textures (if you remembered the Village Elders and their 'plain color' robes, you know what I'm talking about)

Well, everything is looking awesome, can't wait for new blogs and the actual game.
(I agree too with the talk about women maybe being turned into sexual objects, but I trust TaleWorlds would'nt do that.)

what physics engine will the game use? will it be a custom by the devs?

Yep, TW is making a brand new engine from scratch for Bannerlord, which goes some way to explaining the long development time.

well, if it also has the proper strategic depth, and social interactions and ingame systems richness, it will be definately worth buying.

Ok, therefore let's turn Village Elders robes into sexual objects instead. It's obvious not each woman got to look like courtesan (it'd look stupid), but there was no tavern in medieeval without one

how do you know, were you there? I'd like to play mount and blade without feeling like I'm in a dating sim, or skyrim or something.

maybe I was, in other incarnation. Besides there's something like history channels, studies and archives, and yeach right, a whore in a tavern will transform M&B into dating sim, genius one, same as a peasant transforming M&B into farm simulator.
