Mount&Blade II: Bannerlord Developer Blog 1 - Hairy Artists

Fans of the Mount&Blade series and passing readers, this blog is intended as a source of insight to our world of game development and the TaleWorlds family. Our offices are a series of rooms on a long corridor. Each room physically hosts a different team with a different focus, mirroring our actual team based development structure. This week's blog will discuss the artists' team, known to us as artist takimi (Turkish).

Read more at: http://www.taleworlds.com/en/Games/Bannerlord/Blog/2

It suggests hunting, not messaging or scouting as in GoT.
Or maybe they'll make a GoT clone this time, I'm sure everyone on the team loves it.

I read somewhere that, historically, birds of prey were used to intercept (kill and bring down) carrier pigeons. That could be an interesting feature (e.g. intercepting a lord's message to his ally stating that he is leaving a particular fief poorly protected, or he plans to attack your fief in "X" days).

But I have to admit, hunting would seem a more obvious feature to include. Maybe a bird of prey and a falconry/hawking skill would give plus "X" amount of small game meat while travelling the campaign map.

Maybe both features?

It indeed is a binary message to us... when decoded, it reads: œ

When we google it, we get to this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C5%92

It is used in the modern orthography for Old West Norse and is used in the International Phonetic Alphabet to represent the open-mid front rounded vowel. In English runology, œ is used to transliterate the Runic letter odal ᛟ Runic letter othalan.svg, and so œ is sometimes called œthel, oethel or ethel (from ēðel 'estate, ancestral home').

Old Norse was spoken from 8th century to the 14th century (about). Of course this means that Bannerlord is set between those years.
Now that was an easter egg!

But a roman-like faction wouldn't be plausible in this timeline... Who cares anyway? I'll not start one of those silly discussions about what is or isn't historically accurate within a fictional game.

Looking forward for more news, keep the great work TW!

It's hard to believe how Taleworlds has grown to a full-fledged studio. It feels like yesterday when I first time downloaded ancient M&B version around 2005

But the real question is:

Does Armagan still code in his underpants now that there are more people?

Should never get too far from your roots, you might lose yourself

Remember Taleworlds is a Turkish company, and the Byzantine Empire was very "Roman-like"
Seems obvious that Taleworlds will place a Byzantine faction at the centre of the game lore,
as the old empire struggling to survive against rising kingdoms/factions around it.
The empire collapsed in mid 15th. century to the (Ottoman) Turks. Would not be surprised if we see something similar to that...

Dem fighting words! That's like saying the English people are very English-like.

That's for sure. I forgot about the Byzantine part of the Empire.

I was going to say that the background of the Bannerlord website does look quite cold and grim, aka northern, but then I started thinking of the faceplate, which does for some strange reason remind me of Byzantines, and then I checked the actual screenshots, and damn. Nearly all architechture, arms and armour does look eastern-ish to me.

Good Work!

I hope there will be may different beards!

What Happens if you have long hair or a long beard and use a helmet?
Will we see the rest of the Hair/Beard?
Or will you use the same mechanic as in Warband?

So basically, I'll go through some more details of the screenshots, and give my ideas as to what culture is portrayed, for the less historically inclined.

Screenshots 1, 2, & 5 are definitely a Mamluk, Ayyubid, or other muslim middle-eastern culture, probably Sarranids.

Screenshots 3 & 4 are rather unique and hard to place. It's a dry, mountainous region, which suggests Turkish. However, the townspeople and equipment of the player character suggest a separate culture, possibly Byzantine, Georgian/Armenian, or Syrian. Who knows, it may just be a Sarran village.
Bannerlord_03.jpg

Bannerlord_04.jpg

Shots 6 & 9 seem to be Northern European, probably Nords. Equipment and architecture, as well as environment suggest this to me.
Bannerlord_06.jpg

Bannerlord_09.jpg

Shot #7 is very clearly central asian(Kirgiz, Kazakh, Mongol). Very Altaic. So therefore, Khergit.
Bannerlord_07.jpg

8 & 11 are very obviously Western European. The Crossbow, the Kettle helmet, the Mailed horse, and the architecture of #8 are very Swadian.
11 seems like it could be either Nordic or Swadian, because of the longbow and similarity of some buildings to shot 6.

Bannerlord_11.jpg

Finally, Shots 10 and 12 are so Byzantine/Roman. If the architecture weren't enough, the equipment of the player in 10 is very obviously Byzantine, with the placement of the straps, and the leather rerebraces.

if i was looking for graphics there are plenty of games out there

i'm not saying do not improve the graphics, just please make the content and game play richer than version 1, so we don't get tired playing it for months and there is always something new

and please, put a pre-order with release date already  i can't wait any more

Mount & Blade is a great game. I am really looking forward to Bannerlord. I am sure it will be a very good game. And if it will look better, that is just a plus.

I'm just happy to see that they are putting more effort in than they did to WFaS.
