It really depends on the player. Troops lead by the player seem to have a destinct advantage on the battle field. I could lead 100 Nord infantry against 100 Swadian Cavalry and win, but likewise I could lead 100 Swadian Cavalry against 100 Nords and win.

Honestly though, I think Swadian Cavalry are the strongest with no player boost. I love my Nords dearly, but I'm confident without my leadership skills the would be ran through by Swadians.

Infantry, for siege and field.

Mercenary swordsmen: low quality but all round troops
Vaegir infantry: Footman: Weak armoured, quite fast, Veteran, not much better, sometimes have horses, Infantry: good shield and saber Guard: heavy hitting infantry, vurnerable to archers
Nord infantry: sometimes have throwing weapons, which you should not use, often use short axes and heavy armour
Rhodok infantry: long range infantry next to impervious to arrows (when having a shield)
Swadian Infantry: Somewhere between Rhodok and Vaegir infantry, but lacking in effectiveness

I reckon effectiveness as 'kick ass' and 'flexibility' combined. That's why I often choose Infantry (Only Vaegir/Nord/Rhodok Infantry) + Archers (Rhodok or Vaegir Infantry)

those types kick ass enough in the field, AND they kick ass in sieges  knights, on the other hands, are only half effective. They only kick ass in the field, but I would NEVER deploy them in a siege

Knights win, hands-down. A force of 100 mounted Knights can rape any other 100 troops in game.

Not in a siege, and not if the knights are controlled by the AI  I used to struggle with a Swadian cavalry charge, but now it's routine to stop a charge. But I won't ever deny that Swadian Knights suck... they're just not flexible enough

Actually, I have noticed that in sieges Vaegir Knights can be as effective as Huscarls in sieges if used right way. Their bardiches do nice job on top of the siege ladder on both sides. Just don't get them charge before shooting enemy archers.

Rhodok seregants are most effective and verstile unit in game IMO, they do great at sieges and pretty well on field.

I'll have to vote Knights on this one. Mainly because I managed to conquer half Calradia as a solo rebel using basically only Knights. It doesn't matter much, sieges, on the field, they're super effective. But it does get booooooring after a while, therefore I don't think I'll ever finish that savegame ...

Nords lose against the Swadians, every time.

I voted cavalry. Although, infantry are possible the most fun to play. Or archers..

Define efective though. Infantry as always i history are the most versatile, they can make a decent stand on open plains, and fight well in thick terrain or seiges. Cavlary are, excuse the pun, one trick horses as in that they excel at open plains but not too well anywhere else. Same with archers, they cant normally fight without support.

Infantry cause where they arnt the most effective on an open field, they can fight in any situation and put up one hell of a ight with a good chance of winning if given the right management. And of course for the most efective... Huskarls!

Now, that's what I lika about the Vaegirs, their cavalry is mediocre ok (something around mercenary horseman quality) and while dismounted, they do better than dismounted Swadian knights. + Vaegir guards are OK, but I would never replace my huscarls with them.

And I both use Rhodok Sharpshooters and Vaegir Marksmen. The bloody combination of Vasili Zaitsevs (Rhodoks) and Heavy machinegunners (Vaegirs) makes my enemies run in fear

if they implement sieges into warband then all the knights (like KB) are going to lose unless they learn to be flexible
Hmm? what you really think a dismounted knight is slow? the speed of moving side ways is the same no matter how heavy your armour is. so we can still dodge arrows if they aren't caught by our shield. and the morningstars may proof usefull when up close?

I know we have to be flexible but don't you think that counts for every unit? we might not be the best at everything because that would be just plain unfair for others. but we sure as hell kick infantry's butt. the only way they can survive our charge is when they are teaming up.

1 knight is an annoyance, 10 knights are trouble, 100 knights = unstopable.
1 infantry is not even a bother. 10 infantry its finnaly starting to look like something? 100 infantry, now they finally are able to stop like 50 knights?

face it aslong as the field isn't as small as a castle(during siege) cavalry will rule the plains both swadians and khergits (thou i would watch out for vaegirs aswell).

Swadian knights for overall performance.

That or Khergit Lancers.

Huscarls are superior in a siege, but let's face it.....in open field, Huscarls would be eaten up by same amount of knights.
