I think we can all agree that having to journey across the map just to talk to one particular lord is simply boring, unrealistic and time consuming.
Having messengers and / or diplomats would fix that.
How to hire / acquire messengers and diplomats
- They could be hired from court halls, they would be talented in speech, diplomacy and scouting*. Alternatively, you could have a companion act as a diplomat or messenger for you. Just like in Warband, if they don't have high enough diplomacy or speech or charisma whatever it is, the less likely they are to persuade someone as a diplomat, which is why hiring already talented diplomats would be a safer investment.
*Why scouting? I believe messengers should also have a second function in being spies or scouts, they wouldn't be worth the cost otherwise.
Why and how to use
- Obviously, you could tell your messengers / diplomats whoever it is you want to talk or make an offer with. They would be going alone, or with one or two escort horsemen, meaning no army would be able to catch up to and capture them (unless ambushed, hopefully it'll be implemented soon).
- And why? Unsurprisingly, it would be a lot faster and cheaper (as you don't have to maintain your entire army marching across the world to find said person). They would officialize war declarations, peace treaties, barters and so on. Goes without saying of course, in medieval times, travel could be difficult, dangerous, costly and time consuming. Important people such as rulers, bishops and nobles had little time or inclination to travel with news or messages and so, would employ trusted messengers to act on their behalf.
