Maybe this is a rant after a battle was lost that I should have easily won, but perhaps many of you are in the same boat as I.
I had an army of about 85 "professionals", mixed imperial and battanian many of which where tier 3-4 infantry that I placed in shieldwall just below a hill where about 15 tier 3 archers were stationed. Cavalry was present, but irrelevant to the situation.
I was attacked by two Battanian lords combined about 130 men, almost 70-80% of the army were Tier 1 Battanian Volunteers. The first thing that screwed me was the ranged bug where archers do not fire until the enemy is extremely close. I purposely stationed them at the peak of the hill so their line of sight was perfectly clear for at least 100-150 meters of the enemy advance. The time of day was also early morning.
Archers, unable to fire until the last 5 seconds before infantry lines clashed took out maybe 2-3 volunteers before I pulled them back. Now it was up to the infantry to hold the shieldwall, and my cataphracts hooked around for a hammer and anvil maneuver. Here's the problem: despite the enemy infantry not really flanking or getting behind my shieldwall, they were able to spam themselves to victory by shear numbers. Their losses were minimal too, because of the flinching that occurs when you get struck and maybe also because attacking (In my opinion) is WAY too fast. A bunch of tier 1 infantry literally bonked my trained shieldwall to pieces and rendered my cavalry charge nearly useless, where I proceeded to be defeated.
I hope others can get onboard when I say the developers need a serious revisit to infantry skill and armor. Either way, I would like to hear your thoughts.
TLDR: Enemy AI can spam tier 1 volunteers and beat trained armies by having numerical advantage
