I think HULKSMASH's idea of  number of wraps correspond to rank is a good one, could be done with lances, something like this:

So that would be 3 ranks bove GMK because 3 wraps over the top. Keeps the theme of longer flag = higher rank.Then you could maybe add different colours or adornments too.

I know it's not exactly what you wanted HULKSMASH, but I think we came up with something pretty good together . And thanks too Janus for cleaning them up etc.

Now I just have to make it into the noble classes...

Every time I'm on a youtube video and see some marble statue in the comments saying how great Rome was, and saying how the Persians and Gauls are genetically predisposed to spammy infantry, I instantly visualise this.
