Recruit
in the game:
20 man at arms come attack 5 paesants
paesants kill 2 men at arms and then get killed...

real life:
20 man at arms charge at 5 paesants
paesants RUN AWAY SCARED

something like that could help..
and same thing for your party...
you are attacked by 10 knights, you have 5 paesants
2 paesants run away, 3 paesants stand strong(drunk?)

or...
20 vaegirs knights attack you
you have 10 paesants
3 paesants plead mercy and join vaegir knights!
4 paesants run away
you fight off the 3 paesants and 20 vaegir knights without hope and die...

hard to implement in the code, yes...
but in the distant future(hopefully not THAT distant) would be nice to have

well if you think about it, the peasants would have been running away anyway. The reason they are in the battle it because they have been caught on the world map. So if they are caught they are going to fight not die running.

I think this is a neat idea, except for the part about your units deciding to side with the enemy during the battle. They might try to of course, but I would fully expect the enemy to choose to kill them anyway, since it's safer than showing them enough trust to fight alongside them.

I would say this thing should be a function of your Leadership skill. A strong leader would have an easier time getting his troops to stand and fight in impossible odds, while a weak leader might be lucky to keep his troops around even in a fair fight.

Of course, the same thing should hold for the enemy's units. When I ride up on eight River Pirates with my 20 Vaegir Knights, they should either run for the hills and get cut down like the dogs they are, or fall down on their knees and beg for mercy. The enemy should have the option of surrendering and being taken prisoner rather than fighting down to the last unwounded man.

Never underestimate how crazy real life can get, just because you are a reasonable man doesn't mean you will be ruled by one. Here is an example of crazy real nightmare. A minor prince in a little country called Romania was faced with a major invasion of Muslim fanatics and he was old school and fought with his army but he was hopelessly outnumbered by the enemy so he adopted terrorist tactics and impaled his POW's on spears that were planted in the ground. And he signed a treaty with a muslim general surrounded by dead and dying impaled holy warriors and Romania survived as a European country. Now that takes some nerve!

Im in favor of some "fear factor" in this game. Mounted troops, when charging, are probablly something very scary for ground units.

Morale is underused in "M&B" at now, it needs some work to have any real effect on the gameplay. Maybe chivalry charges could lower ground troops morale. Experienced units, like veterans, knights and etc, would have a higher resistance to lose morale during the battle, while peasants, footman, bandits and such would get scared more easily.

As morale drops, the soldier would suffer a penaltty on their fighting skills. If morale drops bellow a certain level, the soldier would run away an try to flee the battle area.

Of course, another factors, besides chivalry charges, could lower troop morale. When your side is getting beaten stronglly in the battle, for example. Getting surronded could also inflict morale penalties on units. Heavy horses, like warhorses, would have a "scary" bonus for their size and appearance.

I think that would made battle more dinamic and realistic.

Aach it is too complicated friend. It would be lousy to watch my troopers run away because of bad odds. Sometimes a whole bunch of them get killed but I can still win, they are only computer generated dolls (I mean action figures of course) Or is it figurines?

Well, I've suggested adding morale several times in several threads. It's not a popular idea - to put it mildly.

However, I thought it would add an interesting and fun dimension to our tactical planning and to our battles.

One of my ideas was to have a sort of morale thermometer, that would shift as the battle progressed: if the battle becomes too one-sided in terms of casualties in a row, or total percentage killed that side's morale meter would decline to the breaking point, at which point they would run for their lives.

So one could break a Sea Raider war party before it even closes with you if you shoot down eight or nine Raiders before they even cross the river or have them so discouraged they run shortly afterwards. Conversely, a friendly warparty that's being cut to pieces may find that he who fights and runs away, lives to fight another day is not just a cliche. It wouldn't necessarily take away the fun of killing 100 knights singlehanded. You could make morale optional.

Sigh... I'm actually tired of suggesting morale and fatigue be added. (My morale is broken and I'm fatigued. :) ) However, it should be considered.

Everything else is: decapitations, guns, multiplayer, magic, Orcs, trolls, boats, blood, zombies, hunting, animals, camping, castles, roads, etc...

I mentioned morale a couple of times too JS.

In my opinion it would be a very welcome addition. Fatigue makes a lot of sense too.

I thought morale would play a part in the final game?! It's already in it to a degree... Even if it currently has little impact...

Definately agree on fatigue too...

Here's my vote of support of being able to break the morale of the opposing side (or have your own side's morale broken). Personally, I don't think it should matter to your troops that you can turn around and kill those 100 black knights by yourself -- they're the ones who'll be dying if they keep fighting.

Sir Saladin... yeah, Vlad was cooool! (not)

:)

And about all that thing with moral, I completely agree... it's a must.
Fatigue can also be a nice aspect.

I agree 147% the idea of morale and fatigue in the game.
About morale i guess having a veteran by your side also would boost th e morale of soldiers... Like counting the number battles of heroes as a morale factor(battles he won of course =P), it's always good to know that there are 38 knights guarding you =D
Vlad Tepesh, the impaler, mostly known as Dracula(or Count Dracul, dunno)? Cool story his one. One hell of a legend around that creeeeepy creeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeepy guy =D
Back to the topic's main subject, fatigue would be associated to the campsite idea repeated over and over on this forum =D
Cya
PS: When a leader fights in the front ,soldiers get a morale boost too =)
PS2: When a leader stay and fight fiercely ,even when things look like a total massacre, troops may come back into battle(mind the battle of Thermopylae, i guess i just can't remember the exact name but if you look at a book it's close to the actual name :) ).

wuts up with all that play station and ps2 talk?

back to the subject...
IMPLEMENT THIS FEATURE in the some next-far-away version!
thanks

PS = Post scriptum(when you write something after you finish a letter , or in my case a post)

Let's hope that if we keep bugging the devs about that in the forum they will implement this feature =D

I like the moral idea. It should be added in game.

Just one problem is spawn point in battle map, though. Because currently, we all spawned near the edge of the field, so if they decided to run, we never have a chance to catch them, no matter how fast you're.

As I said before, morale would be very nice to have in the game, but there is the need to come up with a reasonable way of resolving this or it could become quite annoying...

Take the scenario, where your jolly band of 20 guys is chasing 9 river pirates that are running from your group, you catch up, they run screaming from the field... you catch up, they run screaming from the field... and so on...

So whats the solution? Have the group disperse and give the player a percentage of the kill experience? Could get boring leveling without ever seeing a battle... have them surrender so you can sell them? This just adds to the problem of getting too rich too quick..

Definately something that needs a bit of brainstorming I think...
