Morale and routing

Okay I know this won't be implemented, at least not for 1.0.  Just tossing an idea around really.

I think morale should have a much bigger impact on the battlefield, namely that low morale should cause troops to panic and flee.  In medieval warfare, fighting down to the last man is almost unheard of, and when it happens, it usually become legendary tales.  Having a group of common bandits making a stand to the end is just preposterous; they should be fleeing long before the last handful went down.  The discipline is almost, if not more important than the equipment that distinguishes professional soldiers from peasant conscripts.

In gameplay terms, though, I can easily imagine how annoying it would be to have your enemy flee on you all the time once you get too strong.  But then that would be just another perk for having small armies.

Another potential problem is that the battlefields are too small to allow proper chase, which should normally be pretty devastating on its own, especially when done by light cavalry vs. fleeing footmen.

I think overall the Total War series has the best modelling of army morale and cohesion, and oh it would be so juicy sweet if M&B could do the same... one can only dream I suppose.

how i love chasing down enemys and capturing them in medevil 2 total war  then i ransom them but the stupid scotish guys dont accept

Yes I beleive it is odd when a dozen looters dressed in skins stand thier ground against the might of a 100+ men like the 300 spartans. However if this is introduced, so should some kind of "chase" scene (many times armies were routed and more of them were killed in "the chase" than the actual combat, the persian army vs. Alexander is a prime example)

the AI actually needs to have some sort of  troop "cohesion" (ie. work together) before a morale system gets implemented. The khergits are strong enough thank you very much.

While morale is essential, it shouldn't be used as the value you have on the party map, but should be calculated against enemy strength. For example, when your map morale is 99 and enemy outpowers you by 30%, your troops loose 10% of morale. When your map morale is 20, and the enemy outpowers you by 30 %, your troops would loose approximately 43% of morale. This outcome, "battle morale", should be used to calculate, when will warriors flee.

Well I've thought of this many, many times already and I do feel its kind of disturbing to watch my men stay and fight when we're outnumbered 15-1
On the verse, I think people are misunderstanding what makes this game so special. People ask for so much more in this game, and of course its all fantasy and "what if" dreaming but this game was never meant to be the PERFECT FXCKING HYBRID BETWEEN OBLIVION AND MEDIEVAL: TOTAL WAR!!; I feel as though the devs accomplished ALOT with what they've laid before us. Is there a helluva lot of potential? Of course there is, and after its native release we can only hope the rest of the world notices and responds in kind. Trust me, I doubt M&B2 will be taken as lightly as its predecessor. And with a major third party publisher, you may just get an intelligent battlefield morale system AND a pink pony to boot  And btw I'm not shooting you down at all, just using your thread to state my ideas.
