MOO2 on windows XP?

So I dug out my old copy of Master of Orion 2 and really had the urge to play it again.  The last time i played it was close to 2 years ago on my old comp running windows ME.  Anyway, on XP the screen turns black usually within 30 seconds of play.  I have searched the internet for a solution and found nothing.  I tried setting it to run in windows 98 mode and messed with alot of settings but still get the same problem.  Anyone know of a solution?  Thanks!

Hmmm. Worked fine for me last time I tried it, though I recall a similar problem. Probably a dumb question but have you tried alt+tab out then back in?

Try each of the compatability modes, one of them might work. Alternatively, try running the game in windowed mode and see if it still has a problem.

Probably something here about it.

Hmm, runs fine in compability mode on my XP. *sigh* What a shame that MOO3 was a such piece of crap. The insane diplomacy, mainly. No mod can fix that, no matter what. I hope Sword of the Stars will fill my fix for 4X in space. Too bad the diplomacy seems pretty crappy in it too, based on the demo.

Thanks for the replies guys.  I finally got it working.  After spending about 3 hours trying everything I got desperate and even tried things I "knew" wouldn't work.  I sent the MoO2 directory from my old comp running windows ME to my new one over AIM and just clicked the .exe and it worked...go figure.

I hope Sword of the Stars will fill my fix for 4X in space.

Ah, I downloaded the demo of that the other day.  DO NOT play it.  Don't even look at it.  It is easily one of the worst games I have ever played.  There is no strategy (aside for build more ships than your opponent and send them all in one big mass to attack), the interface is horrible, it's painfully simplistic, and the voices sound like they were intended to make 4 year olds giggle (i'm not exaggerating, they're that bad).  Combat is so horrible after a couple tries I just used auto-resolve.  You can't see anything at all, the commands are...nonexistant, damage indicators aren't even present, and good luck trying to just get your ships to go in the direction you want.  Oh, yeah, and my entire homeworld was destroyed by a random event...a meteor shower.  *Poof*  No more homeworld...just like that.  That sure makes for a fun balanced game!  This game seriously makes MoO3 look good.  Ok, i'm done venting.

I wonder if it's the directory settings for MOO 2 then. I used to have problems running Black & White if I let it install to the Program Files directory, but worked fine from c:\black&white. Probably something to do with permissions or similar (or perhaps just short sighted programmers not supporting long directory names!)

Space Empires IV is a rather cracking 4X in space. Pretty basic graphically, but plenty of meat. Also has the tactical ship combat. Alternatively, Gal Civ II has the purdy graphics and is an excellent successor to the MOO legacy. Only thing it's missing is the tactical combat (you can still design ships, but can't give them orders once combat has started).

For me, Star Trek Birth of the Federation will always be the spiritual MOO 3. Worth tracking down if you can.

4X stands for the goals of :
eXplore
eXpand
eXploit
eXterminate

Explore refers to the fact that the player starts out with limited knowledge of the playing area or map. This can be reflected either by large areas of the map that are completely obscured, or some features may be visible with limited information (for example, the stars in Master of Orion).

Expand refers to the need for the player to expand the territory under their control. This can be by creating new settlements or expanding the area under control of existing settlements.

Exploit refers to the ability of the player to use the resources within their territory, and to improve the efficiency of that usage.

Exterminate refers to attacking a rival player, pushing back their territorial expansion and hindering their ability to exploit resources within that territory. Beyond the cost to the rival, there is often an additional tangible benefit to the attacker, usually in the form of conquered territory and loot.

And I can only second the advise about Space Empires IV - it's quite a cool game and I'm still playing it although it's age of 5 years. I even have started a SE IV play-by-email round with a couple of friends some days ago.

One more advice for people having trouble running MOO2 in win2k/XP.

if the mouse freezes from time to time while playing you can solve it by turning off hardware acceleration in dxdiag. (turn it on again when you've finnished playing).
