Only decent ways to make money I've found is through tournaments and raiding villages.
Problem is, in the start with only one castle being at war with a faction will get you a 400-500 soldier war party visit sooner or later...

Also... is there any way to increase the amount of loot you get from winning battles?

You can not increase the loot.

Try trading goods and winning lots of turnaments, then fight lords and get tons of units. (try fighting lords with lots of prisoners) Once you get a good sized kingdom you will not have to worry about money.

Higher level prisoners, though when money is scarce you can´t be too picky. And don´t trade with Ramun, he pays flat 50 d/head. Try buying goods from villages, they might sell them ridicilously low prices, and then export them with nice profit.

Edit: Sell Ramun prisoners you get less than 50 from Ransom Broker.

Once you siege towns and get a few guild halls, you can quickly end up with a vast treasury.  Mills in your villages help too... and ironically keep your taxes at "low" until most of your fiefs have reached high prosperity.  With a huge army of high levels, and nearly every town and castle filled to the brim with high levels (like 300-400 garrisoned every where) I getting about 40,000 per week after wages.  It's day 344... dun-dun-duuhhh

1- some mods have the option to bet 500/1000 denars in a tournament
2- in SoD you can is very cheap to make peace so don't worry with 500-600 party
3- you can fight bandits for a long time (boring) and earn 100/300 denars for fight,
4- fight in tournaments (1-3 per week) 3500 denars each
5- raid a village (the lord will hate you) give food for a week and some denars with other items like wine
6- trade items on the marketplace (easy and fast) you will be like a caravan, and can win 2000 per day, but you need to avoid big bandit spots and recruit marnid (trade 3)

My favorite way. the 100/300 you get in cash is to spend on candy. The loot and prisoners are the real value.

I usually go through a bandit phase in the early game. This is both for money and to level the companions and myself. Recruit a bunch of man hunters - they are crap, but cheap and will get you prisoners. Use a blunt weapon and equip your companions with blunts. The easiest are mountain bandits, but the most profitable are sea raiders. I like the latter since I also recruit many of them to my army. They will murder your hired troops, so it is best to come with a small group consisting mostly of your companions (they don't die) and hunt small groups of sea raiders which are eager for a fight and will not run away. Just be careful of other groups joining in.

edit:
fighting is never boring, especially the small scale Rambo style.

fight is boring if you are not in a horse, have athletics 0 and the Enemy Troop Morale Wavers

Just turn that off in the camp menu.  I never use it because it makes battles way to easy.

One exploit....er help I dont see mentioned much is CATTLE. Every village you stop at, especially later when they are prosperous; buy cattle, slaughter, and sell en-passant to the next town. Pick up any goods that are dirt cheap and sell along the way.

Use the magelord tweak to raise the tourney bet limits some if you are having a real hard time. It does work in SoD.

Remember that early on, it's all about time management versus money made for the week. Avoid useless quests of any sort that wont pay off with minimal hassle.

Making your own trade runs while gathering peasants, slaying targets of oppurtunity, and winning tourneys is more profitable than almost any quest combo.

The village cattle tip is imbalanced-good in this mod. Cattle are dirt-cheap everywhere, and you'll rake in 2:1 profits on beef. (Mordachai, if you're reading, I am reminding you to tweak this! Thanks my brotha)
