So I just got this game after so many good reviews.

I want the most out of my first experience. So what mods are *Must haves*, and btw what is this  Native compatible mods (is that just the vanilla version of M&B)

Sorry I tried to search but I got like a million results when I search mods + new

Native is the default version of the game.

The battle sizer is probably the only real "must have", it allows you to increase the size of battles beyond the native 100 person limit, the games only really limited by the power of your computer, you should have no trouble with two to three hundred on your average computer and much more if you have a fairly good gaming rig.

The mods in the native compatible mod list stickied in the pioneers guild board are a good place to start if you want to improve the graphics of the game and leave the gameplay as it is, or only tweak it slightly. All of them can be applied to native and most are compatible with each other. They'll also usually work with most mods as well (excepting the ones under "gameplay").

I'd recommend you play Native for a while and get used to the game, then when you've played that out go looking for mods. The ones with their own sub-forums in the Cartographers guild board are usually a safe bet for quality mods, but whatever you're interested in (fantasy, historical, sci-fi, etc) you should be able to find something on it.

sweet dude,

I was wondering if I can actually apply mid way along the game without it freakin it out on me

A mod can be installed at any time. It will not inflict with your current saved games.
Think of a mod as a new 'game'. You can simply switch between native and mods.

Installing mods is easy. Here's the tutorial:

x2

Play the normal game first until you're so bored out of your mind that you NEED a new version of the game. Then seek out "Native Expansion". After that... I suggest branching out into whatever interests you. But I also say, play the actual game first before looking into mods (the exception being the graphical enhancement mod, or battlesizer mod).

Apart from the Battle Sizer, get graphical enhancement if you have a good computer.

The More Metal Sound mod is great for replacing the rather bland sounds Native has.

I agree with this.

I have been disappointed with the Native Expansion and few other mods I tried, so I just play Native + Graphics / Size enhanced with a few tweaks. I want to make the game more fun for myself, so I'm just modifying the Native game to suit my needs. =) I suggest the same, since you can hand tailor the game to what you want pretty easily.
