Mods – Can't play with 'em, can't play without 'em

Users who are viewing this thread

Modding this goddamn game is a truly miserable and frustrating experience. Its so bad it makes me seriously consider going back to modded Skyrim as an easier alternative. I'm convinced that the game actively hates mods. It seems to be impossible for me to put together an interesting modlist that works for more than 20 hours before going kaput.

I'll get a nice list going. Everything seems great and runs smoothly for 10-15 hrs and then the crashes start. Daily tick crashes, crashes going into battles, crashes during battles, crashes after battles. Finally the saves won't even load. Happens every time. I don't think I've ever gotten more than 30 hours into a playthrough.

Its next to impossible to figure out what mod or mods are causing the problems. Most of the time ButterLib or Better Exception Window just point to Sandbox as the culprit with a cryptic error like "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" with no indication of what that object is or where it came from. And god knows what to look for in the game's crash folder. If you ask for help some helpful genius will pipe in with "Turn off all your mods and activate them one by one until you find the culprit," but that advice is useless when the crashes don't start until 10 hours in.

Honestly, I don't know why TW even bothered releasing mod tools. This game's simply not fit for modding. Any mod that tries to do something remotely interesting to the game world inevitably causes constant crashes after awhile. Its unplayable without mods and its unplayable with them.

after experiencing that myself, deleting shaders and then verifying files on steam helped.
If there is truly a mod conflict happening then even that wont help.

I've never tried the deleting shaders thing. What kinds of problems do the shaders cause?
Unsure, but had the same thing happening to me.
Tried literally everything under the blue sky but just kept getting crashes each game tick.
Started a playthrough with mods, first 20h or so, no crashes, then occasional crashes after some fights, then after each and every fight and finally each game tick on the overworld map. Deleting shaders and verifying files solved it.
IIRC, there are tow shaders folders, one which is very small and one with several GB, i deleted both, just deleting the small one did nothing. Good luck.

Not gonna lie, it happens sometimes. I will post the only stable enough modlist that I managed to play for I don't know how many hours without any real problem.

No corrupted saves, no crashes while saving, nothing. This particular modlist used B.A.R.D. troops mod, which seemed to be incompat. with some other bigger mods I avoided. I trusted this mod to make troops cool, and it worked just fine.

The caveats of it are: had to disable Bandits et al. Surrender from AI Values Life; required some heavy handed config in Warbandlord to make it better and fix ranged damage. Some other campaign options had to be changed to make it very stable, not many things, though.
With this modlist, I managed 4 full generations in a save, by starting with Separatism's chaos start, only having minor crashes after some particularly crazy battles, and since Warband I have policed myself to always save before any big battles, for a) save scumming and b) some bizarre crashes.
For some reason, sometimes doing a hand bash (without shield) on enemies caused crashes, I think because it tried to disarm them and something odd happened. I avoided doing it for a while and never had a problem since. Other than that... It worked great. The odd crash here and there, mostly around battles, so it was all fun and games.

I only stopped playing the aforementioned mod list because I wanted to remember what was so great about RBM, and because the stupid Battanians I was so desperately trying to help kept voting to start wars with everyone every other day, and my fief was the last one standing, against about 10 different factions, so I got tired and rebuilt another modlist around RBM, which is still being worked on. Because of RBM and De Re Militari, I had to disable B.A.R.D., or so I thought, and built the mod list around that change. Again, Release [beta] v1.0.1

Only after doing all the work I noticed I could have just installed RBM on the other modlist and chosen only the AI module, so as not to screw armors, weapons and warbandlord. But I'm doing a somewhat test run, and had to stop using Ultimate Mounts Reforged for RBM because it seemed to be causing random crashes on campaign map, and sometimes when I clicked the Save As button. I will await a few years in-game and add UM for RBM and see if the crashes happen again.

huh, interesting. Perhaps it's down to my modlist never being that extensive, but I never have any issues with mods beside hard crashes on start up when I try to use mods that really don't want to work together. But then I just figure out which ones are in conflict and everything is fine. Never had a saituation where crashes or other issue started mid-playthrough. The only exception would be due to game updates, but that is completely normal and to be expected.

That's one hell of a modlist! I have a lot of the same mods, but not nearly as many. It probably takes an hour to move a mod from the bottom to the top of that list. (You can really tell how much Taleworlds understands modding just by looking at the launcher that shows only 10 rows at a time and doesn't autoscroll).

I tried the trick of deleting and verifying the shader files. I don't know if it helped, but I also removed RBM and that seemed to do the trick. I really wasn't expecting RBM to be the troublemaker but I guess it was conflicting with something else in my list. I'm sure my game will start crapping out again sooner or later, so I'll try copying your modlist when that happens and hopefully I'll have the same good luck with it.

Well, my recent return and replay of 1.7.1 has been so miserable, I tought I'd try the 1.0.0 release version. Everything has been a ightmare so far!
Countless hours of trying one mod at a time to figure out what's crashing the game, start, crash, disable a Mod, start again, crash again...and so forth. My list is way shorter than @monoolho , way way shorter and I've never had so many crashes in my 490 plus hours of game time than these last few days.

Today, I decided to try 1.0.0. My Mod list consosts of the usual 5 utility Mods (Harmony, butterLib...etc) plus RBM (with LordUptier and VolunteerUp something), Improved Garrisons, Allegiance overhaul, Diplomacy and the OnGovernor fix.
I uninstall the whole game with 1.7.1, manually remove the remaining folders and reinstall BL with 1.0.0 (45 min), then download all the corresponding utility Mods along with Gameplay Mods. I run the Vanilla game, starts fine, run it for about 3-4 game days, fine.
Then install the Harmony and other Utility Mods. Start a new game, run it for a few days, no problem. I add the Gameplay Mods, game start fine, but then crashes on the 1st or 2nd game day. Start the elimination process, disable a Mod, restart game, crash, disable another Mod, restart, crash...etc. And this goes on for hours. After that, the game continues to crash even when all the Mods are disabled! Go figure.
Not only the crashes are not generating any crash reports, but I had hard crashes with PC shut downs and restarts. Today, I had 2 BSOD's!!

It is so frustrating you have no idea. It would be a whole different story if I did not enjoy the game in the past where I often reached 2-300 game days, but now it's just untolerable! If this happened at the very begining when I first bought the game, I would have thought "this is a piece of $h1t game" and moved on to something different. But NO, I tasted the fun, the addictiveness of this game when it was more stable and now I can't go back to that fun anymore!

You'd think one can just play Vanilla and wait until the games stabilizes and then go back to playing with Mods. The problem is that once you played with them, you can't go back to Vanilla, for a lot of reasons that have been discussed a $hitillion times already.

Not gonna lie, it happens sometimes. I will post the only stable enough modlist that I managed to play for I don't know how many hours without any real problem.

However, I had to stay at Release [beta] v1.0.1, especially since Cheyron has become unavailable, but this modlist was working wonders:

are you using all those Mods at the same time?

Every time someone says "mods will fix it", I think of this.

Taleworlds needs to fix the base game so that 5 separate mods aren't needed to make it a baseline playable experience (let alone adding depth).

I totally agree with you, that was my thought from the first time I discovered the mods for this game!
To me, the priority was and still is a STABLE game. Cosmetics can be added later. At this time we have neither.

Absolute truth.

Yes. Was, now trying with RBM, and the game feels different. Not gonna say better, it's definitely not, just... different. I dunno, I'm trying to enjoy it, but it's not quite as easy... Those shoulder shields and, ah, I dunno. RBM seemed better in 2020, now it's overly complicated and, oddly enough, feels like hollywood to me. One spear hit to the ear and the guy drops dead. Doesn't seem so fun anymore. I'll give it a try for some time more, but other than the armors and troops, it doesn't feel as great. It did feel like "a new experience" to many, not to me, seemed like the same old overly complicated mods in warband that just... Felt too crusaderabooish for my taste. I absolutely adore what they did generally, especially the weak points implementation, but the way armor deflects far too much damage sometimes, where others it seems to completely ignore it... Feels too RNGesus. Not gonna say too realistic, but that too, that IRL a lot of stuff is often random. But that's not all, there's something off somewhere on my list that just doesn't hit the fun spot for me. Something cries of "tryhard" that makes it less of a fun time all around. Which is odd.

I'm seriously thinking about going back to the BARD modlist, and try it with RBM mostly turned off and De Re Militari instead of BARD and see if I can keep the best of both worlds, but have little to no faith in it.

You'd think one can just play Vanilla and wait until the games stabilizes and then go back to playing with Mods. The problem is that once you played with them, you can't go back to Vanilla, for a lot of reasons that have been discussed a $hitillion times already.
Also this. I understand the frustration, and that's part of why I've been away from the game and the forums for over 20 mll tonths, because it requires that special time of: reading, understanding, downloading, fixing, trying mods, before you can even play the damn thing. That's basically the same with all games I play, and why I mostly stopped playing, and kept to Squad and similar player-based games, though even Squad has a ton of "lacking" features a particular mod adds... And that's a whole other shebab of crap.

Thanks! 80% of it is basically the
I need to play the game. Then there's the tons of add-ons like cheats, family control, attribute per level, etc. I need to enjoy it.
I tried the trick of deleting and verifying the shader files. I don't know if it helped, but I also removed RBM and that seemed to do the trick. I really wasn't expecting RBM to be the troublemaker but I guess it was conflicting with something else in my list.
Will try it, if it's any good to me. Might just not be. Also RBM has seemed like a lot of work for a mod. It feels like high maintenance, and perhaps that's what I don't really enjoy about it, not the mod per se, but the work surrounding it
the tryhard simulations to get the bow poundage just about right that it might scrape an aketon et al. It feels too much like people going to Shaddiversity channel and doing the "aktchually...", because Metatron said this and that, and because the other dude just did a dual video with the other dude that knows Latin and thinks himself a serious historian-esque buff youtuberist...
, the extra work in finding compatible mods... too much work for too little fun. Just to go about and "haha! swords can't cut through plate armor! Look how realistic it is!!!!!!!!!!!1!!!" I noticed RBM also became heavily game-breaking around mid-2021, so I had morally given up on it (those silly bouts of "I wanna play bannerlord, is it better yet? Lets look at the pactch notes... Hmm interdasting, what about mods? Oh, RBM, I remember that... what the? Nah." that struck me every 6 months. Never uninstalled the game, just never updated it since 1.5).
Still, brilliant work what they did with the AI module, then again, it always shows up in videos, but I've never actually seen those cool tactics actually happening inside my game...

theres a reason why tw's have spent 90% of the time since the start of EA completely focused on just making the vanilla game stable, the engine is ****ed, 12 years of code mostly written by people who aren't even working at the company anymore

with a cryptic error like "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" with no indication of what that object is or where it came from.
Unless the method where that exception was thrown is more than 10 lines long, you can generally figure out which object it's talking about with a decompiler (sometimes with a debugger).

No, the real question is why it was null when obviously it shouldn't have been in the first place, and that can be very difficult to tell. Maybe it's because of something that happened hours ago, for example a mod created a party with invalid characters, but then a lord is trying to recruit that party, and it crashes when it tries to calculate something about it. In which case, it's code misuse, generally caused by the fact that modders have to meddle with non-API stuff (C# making that possible), undocumented, uncommented.

There could be failsafes though, in this case "don't allow the creation of a party with faulty characters", but depending on the types of check and their amount this can have a impact on performances, and for something again that wasn't supposed to be accessible to modders.

Some crashes will also look like it's caused by the game and not a mod, but try to set the CanDismount flag when a non-mounted unit gets attacked. Even ButterLib won't be able to catch that one because it will happen in the engine, or at least on a deeper level. You're just not supposed to set that flag on a non-mounted unit. And when it happens, neither the game or ButterLib has the ability to tell which mod did it.

I'm 99% positive a few of those "fixed a crash" you see in the patch notes are actually that, devs making sure the game doesn't crash (either immediately or after a while) due to a mod misusing something.

MP aside, the vanilla game hasn't been that unstable.

My sentiment too

It's completely ridiculous I've spent somewhere of around 400 hours trying to get some measure of balance in the game by modding units myself. This is such simple work too, like any intern(s) with a bit of oversight should be able to do this even. It can all be done by simply editing what are just text files. Be a breeze too with a team to test with, which is the real time consumer.

Problem is we all know TW isn't going to do very much in the next year. Sadly I believe the only real redemption for this game is overhaul mods at this point.

I was able to fix my issues with ButterLib by manually installing, read something somewhere about Vortex files in folders being part of the issue.

Edit: And now with today's update I can't launch game...

This is what I worry about right now, because these days I am modding Bannerlord and trying to make a stable list, which version? I don't even know. See below.

9CHHrDm.png

I started it over a month ago. I prefer MO2 for everything, and I dislike the Steam Workshop. But I just.. wasn't able to work on it, so it sat so long the game updated once or twice, and so many other mods updated too.. I was originally going to build off v1.0.0 but now.. I got impatient and annoyed. I've decided to accelerate the process and only grab updated mods for v1.0.2 and try to make something small-ish work instead of starting bigger on an older version.

I'll be sacrificing a bit on the mods I can use but it might be worth it in the end. I can't use Kaoses Tweaks Updated I believe, but you see how many bugs are being reported? So maybe that other tweaks mod instead? Also, I'm opting to use CAW: Custom Spawn's clean API version with Calradia Factions Enhanced to avoid bugs too, can you imagine the crashes? I'm also avoiding Calradia Expanded like the plague since it also has a page of bugs from a month ago

I'm just searching & organizing the mods for now. I still have put them in the right orders in BUTRLoader and see/check for crashes, compatibility and balance to a degree. And then I also would probably need to make a whole separate profile for Realistic Battle Mod. Then maybe after the core mods get marked off, I can see how bad some of the more horny mods are, and or if the Amazon Body from the "New Armor" mod is actually working, then I can maybe share it through Wabbajack and or at least share the load order on Steam.

Respect, sibling, respect.
I wholeheartedly understand and support you. Basically what I have done. My BARD Modlist worked wonders, until it didn't, after trying to push RBM down my modlist's throat without consent.

I have spent the last 20~ days avoiding the game because I had to fix the continuous crashes, which I think might be related to a small bug in Ultimate Mounts Reforged that... might have disappeared after downloading the secondary file and changing it in Vortex files...

I will now post the beta version of my latest try. I got it to launch and run a couple of years without crashing, so I think... It may ... run.

Oh, right, forgot to mention, I just added CEK and Banner kings into it, and it... ran. Which is cool, I guess? I also disabled RBM combat module, only AI and Tournament modules on.

I try to avoid the Workshop like the plague, but unfortunately... it sometimes is my last resort. So I just went ahead and copied all workshop files into a separate folder to then paste into the Modules folder to avoid any future issues now.

Still going somewhat strong with 1.0.1. Sadly, a few updates and thingies here and there don't seem to work with the old version, especially Cheats 3.0, which just freezes the game while trying to start a new game. Thank the Nexus gods there's a previous file there.
