Modern Jousting

So I'm wondering, is there any sort of real modern jousting tournament that goes on these days? I mean you have the shows put on at renaissance festivals all over the place, of course, but I'm looking for a real tournament where there is actual competition occurring. I'm especially curious if it might be viewable online somewhere. I'd like to go out to a real tournament, but I could imagine most of them being in Britain or somewhere else in Europe if they do still go on.

You should join, hear it makes for an interesting pick-up line at the bar:

"Hey, I'm a professional jouster"

"Is that some sort of lame joke?"

If that doesn't work go for the zodiac signs!

I would think they would have a lot of lame rules, a bit like how the big LARP events require wrapping your sword, that you possibly paid a few hundred dollars or more on, in foam and duct tape.

Real jousting would be very interesting.

Edit, to clarify, I meant anything the average person could participate in.

I've seen some convincing Jousting tournaments, none of that duct-tape and pulling throws non-sense; or at least, they hid it well, which is good enough for me.

There's a company called Medieval Times that includes jousting in their programs. Mostly for kids, though. Went to one. Wasn't very substantial.

Many renaissance fairs in the US like to put up combat tournaments, including jousting ones.

Phew! Cause my grandmother bought us tickets for the medieval times place down in Orlando, and then she went out of town so we never got to go. I suddenly don't feel so disappointed anymore.

Hmm... not only would jousting destroy expensive armour, it could also fatally injure someone and cost a massive amount to take part in.

Here is a video of a jousting tournament at Estes Park, Colorado in 2007/2008? The jouster that was unhorsed in the first joust goes by the name of Sir Barchan and he is over 52. He told me that several straps of his armor were broken after that fall, it was also only like the fourth time he had ever been unhorsed in twenty years.

So yeah there are some real jousting troupes out there.

If you like, I have some videos of their performance. But my camera died at the time for jousting.

I've been to Medieval Times in Chicago and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's scripted of course, as it is a show, but it is a really well done show. Plus the food was fantastic.

The video Jericho posted seems like what I'm looking for. A full on jousting competition where the combatants are actually trying to de-horse each other and not just following a script. Thanks for the video.

The moment that guy took his helm off, I thought to myself...

"This guy just looks so ****ing cool for his age".

I hope I will be like him when I'm that old. Hell, if I'm well in money by then I might just take up jousting myself.

If my body won't be up to it, though, I guess I'll settle for the second best thing and sponsor someone else with some armour, a horse and training. Let him take up my sword and all.

I'm suprised at how short a distance they charge at each other and how late their lances are in full-forward position.

Horses accelerate much faster than in M&B, and it's pretty much impossible to keep a lance on target when it's bouncing all over the place.

The point of jousting isn't to unhorse the other guy, it's to break your lance on him. Falling off a horse isn't pleasant.

A couple of Royal Armouries jousting vids:
