I was thinking of taking up archery, and was wondering what bow I should have.

Long bow seems to big for me.
I would also like the average specs for each and maybe some background?

Depends on how much effort you wan't to put into it. Most longbows take a good amount of strength to use even the smaller ones, and take years of training to get any good at it, so don't expect results in the beginning. Modern Composites take very little effort, and are flippin vicious. You don't even have to pull it that far and it goes 40 feet. If you wan't to go with a longbow, start with one of the smaller bows for practice and so you get the feel of it, then work your way up.

My training bow was a pull apart recurve with limbs of 15, 30, and 45 lb draw. Very good for training young pepole, start light and progress to heavy as you get stronger. I'm sure some of todays' compound bows have a similar setting where you can start with lighter weights and go up.
