Modelling question - OBJ map editing

Hi there, I'm editing a map that I've exported from Thogrim's old editor, after figuring out the settings combinations for Wings3D and Blender. I'm looking to add more vertices (as in the deformable points that add detail to the model of the map, I'm not familiar with modelling). I can add them no problem through duplication, but this deforms the map that I'm trying to extend (I'm expanding the size to add new border areas). I've tried splitting the current (faces?) to get more vertices, but this increases detail, and would need to be painstakingly adjusted if I were to try to add size. Scaling seems to get the orientation and symmetry completely wrong.

It seems like I could fix it, but it would take an insane amount of work as I'd need to manually orientate several thousand new vertices to fix them to the same pattern as the current map's. I'm wondering if there is a tool or extension that I've missed that would let me select an area in a modelling tool, and automatically split it into (faces?) of equal size, with vertices evenly spaced to the same spec as the current map? Anything that allowed me to take a sample and repeat it around the map border would be just great, or alternatively something that can arrange the vertices I create through splitting the border areas out the way, so they provide the same amount of detail as the current map.

Or is there a much easier way to expand a map's size, maybe to tack blank 'template' areas on? I'd have a go at writing a script for it myself, but when it comes to shapes and modelling I'm hopeless.

I did expanding in good old Thorgrim editor by selecting and copydragging (hold Ctlr?) a portion of the map surface, then welding vertices to glue stuff together

That's exactly what I need, Demonwolf. Anybody know how I could repeat a tessellated pattern (sampled from the map) around the edges of the map using Blender or some other OBJ editor?

Use Wings3D and triangulate.
