Mod Idea: A song of ice and fire (ASOIAF)

Ahh, I loved those books. Read them a long time ago and have all but given up hope of the guy finishing it up. Is he even working on it? Its been years.
The best point is that it isn't good guy vs bad guy, just different people reacting to circumstances depending on their personality and goals.
Great author, but I would probably strangle him if I saw him, or tie him up at a desk until he finished.

EDIT: oooh, just did a quick search and noticed that a feast for crows is scheduled to come out soon. I'm gonna cry...

Sheek, as i think i said on the ezboard forum, i can help, but have no mod experience whatsoever, so would basically be an enthusiastic useless person. Im in, if necessary.

Feast for Crows is out... and during reading it, my thought was... Wow... Mount and Combat would be perfect to make a game for this. I probably will look into seeing if i can help you guys, though I have no experience what so ever with modding.

Edit: Send me a message if you want to see if I will be able to help

A Feast for Crows focuses primarily on King's Landing, the Iron Islands, and Dorne. Oh, and the Vale. I would say more, but then it might evolve into unwanted spoilers.

Sweet, I've got a note here to get it from the library. Too bad I already have 5 books out...

Come on, people!! someone please finish this mod ) if my sister/mother/father knew there is a mod like this, they would start playing MaB right now. we're all huge fans of the books.

Unfortunately, this mod appears dead. Sheek was the one who knew modding, and I do not have the time or skill to learn how to. If anyone else wants to start, I would be exceedingly happy, but it appears that it is dead. For now. Maybe once i get into college...

This would be one heck of a mod to play, especially if siege warfare/squad orders get implemented at some point in the future.

As far as the legal copyright issues are concerned, modding falls into pretty much the same category as fan fiction does. It's allowed, provided its not used to make money that rightfully would belong to Mr. Martin, since it is his world.

There is even a fan-made MUSH that Mr. Martin has officially approved of, so he seems inclined to appreciate fans playing around in his created world.

I wouldn't worry over being sued.

Mr. Martin does not approve of people starting A Song of Ice and Fire MUDs/MUSHes without first obtaining permission from him to do so.

Don't know about the mod but this thread got me interested enough to go and look for the books. That is if The Wheel of Time lets me read anything else.

SOIAF blows Wheel of Time right out of the water. It's like comparing gold to a particularly shiny, glistening turd.

Yes, SOIAF really is that good. I absolutely adore it. Maybe one day, if I work really hard, I can hope to aspire to write books half as good as these.

Thaumaturgically,
Winter

Yea, this series is the best fantasy book series that I have ever read. The books are simply amazing. Far better than Robert Jordan and even better than (donning flame-retardant gear) Tolkien (though he is still awesome). If you hadn't read his Song of Fire and Ice series, don't. It will ruin every other fantasy book you read. How can a man go back to spam after eating a steak?

A mod of this series would be increadible, and actually somewhat easy. There is no magic in the books (well, not really) nor mystical creatures (other than 3 baby dragons that have yet to make it to the main plot of hte book). There are several distinct warring factions vying to control the Iron Throne.

Sadly, I lack any modding skills. To even begin to know how to make this mod, it would take me as long as it takes George RR Martin to write a book.

That is legal speak for "He'd like to give you permission and know about your idea." I talked to him (a little) several years ago. He is very easy to get along with and very easy going. He actually sold me 2 autographed first edition hardcover "A Game of Thrones" books for less than the retail price. It is likely that the above phrases were formulated by one of his lawyers. Don't let the legal info on Westeros.org scare anyone away from doing this mod... just contact Mr. Martin first.

Oh, and his email is [email protected] (same email for years). He doesn't mind fans contacting him at all, though you might have to wait for a response for a while. He gets a lot of mail.

Taking your word for it Winter I'll look SOIAF up. I'd just like to know if it's something like The Chronicles of Camber of Culdi by Katherine Kurtz. It`s a series of medieval fantasy books written back in the dark ages, the 80's  , and I found them extremely good but I never got to finish them.

Thanks anyway pal, I'll give it a try.

Its pretty common to see GRRM mentioned alongside JRRTolkien in any discussion on fantasy. They are easily on par with one another (aside from JRRs obvious domination of the undead realm).

This could be a great deal of fun... I played with the map some, but I've found the world is far too large (that of Westeros) to fit in one area. The citys and troops are all in, at this point, but aside from that, it's all stock M&B. We'll see how well we can keep it going... If anyone else is interested in helping with this project, please drop me an email or PM. I want this to be successful, and I dont have a whole lot of skills as far as rendering goes, the rest of it is easy enough, though..

Let me know if you're interested in helping!
