So i just got to the battle at readingum where you try and get your mother...again, lol. No matter how i command my troops and no matter how many men i kill myself. My army of 157 doesn't stand a chance against the large army of very well armed and armored troops. How did you guys beat that mission?

Depening on the game difficulty your player level and skill, you may need alot more men than 160, unless they are all danish elites / svear warriors or equivalent and your a level 50 berserkr called Rollo.

After Ascendun you are usually rewarded with 2 castles in the east angle area, these castles will have a garrison of over 100 men each, take those and with the additional 50 men you get before you attack the hideout you should have at least a chance. If you play on normal settings, you may need more men, as sven can field over 200 vikings, including 80 danish elites, that means you need >300 men.

Now it depends on your difficulty setting and player skill. When the battle starts there is not enough time to arrange troops, especially since sven attacks from the rear, the savest option is to order a full charge immidiately, most of your men will focus on the rear, you have to get behind those guys and attack from the rear and kill as many danish elites as possible. Depending on the player skill and level of the character you should be able to kill at least 50 men turning the tide in your favor. When you see that your men have the upper hand rush to the front and repeat. There it will be more difficult as you will get attacked so you cannot dish out as much but have to be more careful picking targets preferably stay on the flank and decimate them so your men can flank as well increasing the damage output.

Be careful once you won the battle outside, as there will be more to do inside, dont die.

Honestly, I found that mission frustrating. I personally didn't have two castles with 100 men awarded to me, so I had to do it with about 160 only. Especially since I didn't have the patience to run around a Britain full of enemy saxon kingdoms to recruit new troops.

Simple solution: I turned down the battle size drastically so that Svens forces only came in waves and I could use my own elite troops against his without having to rely on masses of untrained peasants as soldiers.

I did that mission twice. The first time was in 1.03 version and I had a large force of warriors in mail (no less than 100 between high tier norsemen and Svear Warriors) plus a large amount of lesser tiers. We managed to beat them but it was a close call.

The second time (in 1.04)...I had to reduce the damage to my men and myself and even then it came down to a showdown between me and 7 guys. Good thing I brought two shields.

Thank you for responding guys, i appreciate it. And i don't think i was rewarded with castles. If for some reason i just happened to miss it. What are the names of the castles?

You don't get a castle for completing any mission directly, it's just that because your renown and relations with your liege and fellow vassals are increasing due to accomplishing quests that you're more likely than usual to receive the next castle or two if your faction captures any new fiefs by the time you get up to Douar-An-Enez (if your faction isn't capturing any castles then you can't expect anything).
