I agree, made a thread on this awhile back.
However.. I think this quest is actually bugged so it might be a "be careful what you wish for" situation - that you get a blank slate companion out of it just due to the quirks of the game assigning their attributes/focus/perks after they're generated when you pay troops, so that you can predictably time it, is probably unintended.
However it is more enjoyable than being stuck with the RNG assignments. Not as bad as wives/husbands though, since at least now we can use arena master to respec useless perks for companions. If you get a RNG wife/husband that isn't virile and/or has just totally garbage perks in whatever skills you wanted them to use that hurts way more.
IDK why but the devs seem oddly against giving us customization options, while being stuck with RNG doesn't really add much to the gameplay(arguably it detracts) and doesn't have that much effect on game balance.
