I'm not sure to how much depth the missile mechanics go, but I've read people saying that the longer the distance the lower the damage of the projectile and that the AI is smart enough to understand at what distance they should fire in order to cause reasonable damage. But in practice we see oddities which led me to the conclusion that:

- The loss of damage potential of a missile doesn't factor in Missile Weight.

And that's why we see Crossbowman firing at insane ranges while Archers won't. In reality, Crossbowman shouldn't fire at long ranges, it would be just pointy sticks falling down, they wouldn't even pierce light armor. In reality Longbowman were deadly because the arrows had a lot of weight to them and they would maintain most of their damage potential even at long ranges. For a missile to maintain damage pontential it requires weight and that should be factored in.

And so my suggestion is that missile weight should be factored in.
