I just want the CHOICE to go back to being able to switch off my computer with two or three clicks instead of having to engage the keyboard.

The only way to turn off the laptop according to what I found out is to go the settings from the thing that pops up from the right of the screen, choose power settings and click shut down. Is there any other way? (The old way in which we click Start and than shut down is definitely much more useful and stupid)

You may want to hold on to something, because this will probably blow your mind.

Yeah, power icons. For those of you who need someone to hold your hand, let me Google that for you.

That's right. It was a new operating system, and it didn't work how I wanted it to. So with about two minutes of Google and one small download, I customized my startscreen so that it did exactly what I wanted. I feel like I should have won a damn Nobel prize for it, geez.

Genius-boy Llew also got rid of the metro Skype app, and created that nice pretty tile so that it links to the desktop skype program, which works much better.

The point is, it doesn't take much effort to make it work for you. I get tired as hell of everyone *****ing about how different it is, and stubbornly refusing to take matters into their own hands.

****, this is Windows, people. It's not like you haven't ever had to get in and hack a registry file, re-install the OS or get down and dirty on it before. What's the big deal?

The difference between Windows 8's start screen and Windows 7's user interface is the same as the difference between CAPSLOCK ALL THE TIME and typing like a normal person. Do you see the size of those icons?

Its the same as Steam's new MASSIVE FONT OF DOOM. I had to install a skin that made the font back to size 12 before I shot myself out of rage at the huge ass font.

Size matters.

I see what you're saying, but I don't agree at all. I never used the start menu, so all my icons were on the desktop. Which made for a damn messy desktop. In windows 8, I had the chance to not only clear the desktop, but also make a very pretty start menu for all the main programs I use.

Yep, purely for aesthetics. I like the aesthetics of windows 8. At least a nice change from the old dull working style.

To be honest even having the file manager be that obtuse is ridiculous. It makes me feel like I'm using a Mac.

There is a file manager.  Click the desktop button and then press the Windows key (if you're still playing your game: that's the key that looks like the Windows flag) and E key to open file explorer.  If you want to make it easy to access, right click on the icon (the icon is that shiny thing on the bar at the bottom of the screen on the desktop) and click pin to desktop, so you can open it at any time from the desktop.

I'd like to point out that the time spent learning silly hotkey combos for things that should be obvious and upfront, you could have memorized the 10 or so most useful bash or windows shell commands.

Windows 7 was an amazing operating system, Windows 8 just seemed way to rushed. I run on Windows 7 though, so I wouldn't know.

W8 is just their dumb attempt to try and market a tablet OS system
Indeed, IMO they should work on WP8 instead, and I must admit that I really liked the UI design of it.

Folms 说:
Don't care, as long as there is a Start Button.

This. Or I'm sticking with 7, and they are going to revisit the whole XP fiasco if they don't do this right.

I thought that was the point. It's the ****ty trial and error OS where they get to use millions of people as guinea pigs while they develop a worthwhile OS for the future. Windows 9 (if that is what it will be called) should be pretty good. But like Vista, I wouldn't even bother with Windows 8.

With the push towards fullscreen apps in Windows 8, keeping the name "Windows" seems a bit silly.

Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Well Magorian Aximand, I think Microsoft get's these "bursts" of inspiration of what the customer base needs and really pushes that agenda and then next OS spends all their time doing damage control. 9 is going to be amazing I bet because they are going to be hurting right now when companies don't see any reason to upgrade to windows 8 right now.

But all the little apps on the main screen are in windows right?

Llandy: "I don't want it dumbed down! WAH!"
Llew: "Well I always used it in a dumb way, so this dumbed down version is better for me! It MUST be better for you too!"

You can shut down Windows 8 in two clicks. Move to the bottom right of the screen, click settings, click power off.

You mean, mouse to bottom right, click settings, click the power button, click "shut down"?

I believe I know a faster method - throw it down a flight of stairs.

Funny man.

I haven't bothered to look into the whole W8 thingy much, but I don't see any reason to abandon W7 yet. Is there any? I mean, it seems to me as if W8 is just an interface overhaul, did they actually upgrade anything on a more 'mechanical' level? I couldn't care less about how I turn off my PC or find my way through the files.

I think there won't be any more version for DirectX anymore that aren't Win8 and mutli-core support is better. That kind of stuff.
But thankfully the gaming industry is in the yoke of decade old console hardware - soon half a decade old console hardware - so we won't really have to worry about that too much.
