Does it worth it to spend a lot of money on mercenaries in the campaign or its better to join a faction and recruit their soldiers

I'd recruit the mercenaries, they are customizable and can be some of the best soldiers in the game.

If you start your own faction, you could give them fiefs (towns/castles), and they will recruit their own troops and become their own army for your faction But thats not until later on in the game...
