Merchants that are famous arms dealers that sale weapons, armor and other equipment to the player or other characters. Maybe they are foreign from other lands and dead cultures and have an impressive entourage and stay on ships in port towns. They are seen as special guest like claimants. And they could have powerful units for the late game making them important to all factions and the merchants of death could play a chess game of profiting from war.
