Mercenary Companies

I was thinking it'd be neat if mercenary companies and religious orders existed as entire parties that you hired together, instead of single people that you pick and choose from individually. These companies could exist as a separate party on the map that follows you if you hire them, thus taking care of their own food and not slowing down your own party or taking up slots that your regulars occupy. It'd also let you be really deliberate about the exact composition of troops that a player gets when he hires a particular company.

They already exist if you own a castle or town and have a castle steward appointed.  There's a random "Mercenaries for Hire" quest that can trigger.

This is the fastest implementation of a suggestion ever!

On a related note, how will mercenaries work in the treeless troop system? Didn't see them mentioned in the blog post.

They will no longer appear in taverns, but instead show up in the recruitment screen with everyone else.  Their "pool" of recruits is separate from that of peasants or veteran soldiers and is refreshed every few days as mercenaries in native are.  The types that are available depend upon your current improvements, specifically the Mercenary Chapterhouse.  As actual "mercenary orders" are established and given their own relationship value then they'll replace the native mercenaries as appropriate.

Yeah I ended up hiring a group of 68 khergits called the Windriders, though I wish you could give them orders instead of them just following you.
