It doesn't have to be historically accurate music.

I was watching Chariots of Fire recently and thought to myself "hmm, electronic synth pop wasn't invented in the 1920s, this is a travesty!".

I don't care about it being historically inaccurate. I care about it being both historically inaccurate and out of place. Rimsky-Korsakov describes the clarinet as "pliable and expressive, suitable, in the major, to melodies of a joyful or contemplative character, or outbursts of mirth; in the minor, to sad and reflective melodies..." It's the brass and percussion that are used to express threat, violence and action; themes which I think are a little more suited to a game about hacking your fellow man to death.

There is always the option to mute the music & play your own in the background.

by what standards? classical music?

Aye. Horns and indefinite percussion were the usual ways to represent said themes in classical and romantic music. Although Grieg made effective use of the English Horn (which isn't a horn) for it. Anything is possible. I just think the music sounds a little inappropriate.

For someone who refuses to include, in his mod about the Napoleonic Wars, the music that Napoleon chose to accompany himself, you're being almost surprisingly critical.

The tune is labelled a wip for the intro, I don't think it's going to be played during combat.

And why should it fall under the "usual" conventions? I see no issue with the emotion that piece is seemingly trying to convey, it builds an appropriate atmosphere fairly successfully. I make this example again, the Chariots of Fire soundtrack is technically alien to the period it's set in, both in terms of the instruments it uses and the melodic structure, yet it still succeeds in creating the desired emotional response. The same could be said about this WIP piece. Every opinion is valid because it is almost completely subjective, naturally.

And once again I contribute nothing to this discussion. I'm going now.

Why a clarinet and string quartet in a medievaly game?

E instruments were made firstt around that time 20-30. First were some sort of epiano.

Sure, electronic instruments did exist in the 20s and some people even made "music" with them. However, electronic music only really became popular towards the end of the 1960's with Moog and Carlos, some 40 years later. Synth pop was invented/devised mostly during the mid to late 70s.

That was my point, Chariots of Fire is set in the 1920s which is completely devoid of popular electronic music.

I hope the combat music is different, but they can have that kinda music over the menu ofc.

But then again, if combat is anything like Warband i'm probably going to mute the music anyway since loud music in the ears can disorientate you and make you miss cav coming from behind etc. Music is normally a big part of my enjoyment, but not in games that require such situational awareness.

Also if the ingame sounds are like in the vid i posted last page, it will be properly immersive, dont want to ruin that with blaring music over the top. Not to forget of course, that there is still the strong possibility (hinted at in Melee forums) that there will be the option for players to bring instruments to the battlefield and make their own sweet music  it wouldnt be a true battlefield without.

Backed it. I finally (hopefully) gave some money to the crpg team! I hope the game is as successful as the mod.

Would be interresting to see who wins in a "Native vs cRPG" Stronghold matchup in Melee:Battlegrounds and another matchup in Mount&Blade:Bannerlords

I really hope the kickstarter campaign is going to be a success because these guys really deserve it for keeping alive and improving cRPG for 4 years, I've been playing it since 2011 and it will be one of my best gamer's memory I think.

Now without all the warband engine limitations and harcoded stuff and the amount of work they put into the mod I can tell this is going to be great!

Always bugged me. Why don't you put this in your signature so you don't have to type it every time you post? I mean it's your signature is it not? That's what the thing is for!

Anyone else having trouble registering on their site?

At the moment i think there's a bug to register on the melee forums without first creating an account on c-rpg.net, but they're definitely aware of it and looking to fix this asap.

There should be something epic announced soon though so we'll keep this thread up-to-date at least.

It's been like that for years, ASAP my ass
Well, I am pretty sure not being able to register on the forum without a cRPG account was intended up until 6 days a go.

Then why have the register button there? Isn't the only way to sign up by clicking the banner on cRPG.net?
