Medic/no Medic

I was interested to know whether the community uses a separate group for a medic - such as Ymira or Jeremus?

I haven't yet found Jeremus and in his absence I have been training Ymira as a medic which is going nicely - BUT - I wondered if I could get her levelling up quicker as a member of my companion cavalry group so she would fight more but also stand a greater chance of getting ko'd.

I have her as group 8 and this keeps her mostly safe - she even participates with a masterwork hunting bow from behind our battle line but can she be doing more???

Crossbow and bolts, stick'em in the archer group and be careful how you position the archers. Worked wonders for me. A bit tricky at start, but mid to late game they make awesome archers. At lvl 20somethin Borcha and Jeremus have over 260 skill whit crossbow and make kills almost every battle. And some amazing shots from time to time.

Sticking them in another Native group doesn't seem as prudent as keeping them isolated. I typically have my medic and engineer in a "Support" division that gets left at spawn point in most battles.

To gain them some XP, once the battle is won and the mopping up is all that is left, I'll call the majority of my troops off and send support in. Also, when fighting bandits or I don't have any large engagements on the horizon--the kingdom isn't at war, for instance--I'll tend to let them fight.

Simply calling support in to the end of battles to help with the mop up seems to net the Support staff a decent amount of XP...and keep them alive.

Light Cavalry or Archers Is where I put them.  And only use your light cav to mop up. The way I play it might as well be called Vultures cuz thats all they are used for. Actually I think I'm gonna rename that group now

They are part of my 8 companion vanguard charging into the enemy line and breaking their ranks before my infantry arrive. I give them a few powerstrike/ironflesh first to make them combat effective but with that and heavy armor they don't really die. I also keep two medics just in case.

They are too good at killing for me to leave back in a corner. Plus they gain exp a lot faster.

It's worth noting that in this game I am using Caba's Pre Battle Orders and deployment mod. Using this you can tell groups to skirmish and thereby avoid melee altogether. It is most useful and with medics and engineers/specialists as a separate group you can do as Caba says and commit them when you want to rather than risk them along with the tanks.

My doubt is that in previous games Jeremus was my medic and was always kept at the bottom of the party list - but as things go he was a tank too and this was by reason of him operating as part of the elite cavalry group he belonged to.

I think there are pros and cons to both methods

Personally I put Ymira (my medic) right in with the rest of the companions as heavy cav, but she's first in the hand-me-down order of equipment, so she has the best weapons and armor of any companion to help keep her alive.
