[MBMC] Mount & Blade Modding Contest [January 2019][Scening]

Users who are viewing this thread

Hello everyone!
As the cold winter winds blown outside, my thoughts traveled into the distant south, where the sun always shines warm and green palm trees cover the sandy beaches of the azure-blue ocean.
So for me, this month's scening contest is about the warm, tropical parts of Calradia, that has never been seen before!

-Jungle Grotto-
My first Submission is a system of caverns, ravines and hollows that has been deepened by a mountain creek.
This place is hidden deep inside a large and mountainous rainforest. The only way to get to the caves, is through a fallen tree trunk, serving as a bridge above the deep abyss. Recently, a group of adventurers has made camp inside...

-Braddock's Booty Beach-
My second submission is a small tropical islet, in the middle of the Pirate Waters.
This Island served as a camping site of the pirate captain 'Braddock the Grim'.
After years of robbing trading ships, Brad's fortune grew bigger than he could spend. So he hid the treasures away from his greedy sailors, especially the cunning 'Scurvy Hobson'.
Recently Captain Braddock died by falling off the treehouse after a night of excessive rum consumtion...He seems to have taken his secrets with him to the grave...
Shortly before the Captain's death, Scurvy Hobson have disappeared. Was it the sharks? Nobody knows. Nobody cares.

Mini game:
-Find the captain's treasure (It's a big chest, filled with gold and gemstones)
-Find the 5 small gold chests hidden away on the island
-Find out how Hobson died

A small explanation:
I initially designed this map with MP siege in mind. I'm more of a multiplayer mapper. Hearing it had to fit a single player mission type, I decided to go for the Castle Keep Interior. I scattered the entry points of the lords and ladies as well as the "nurse" or "chancellor" around in the whole construction. The idea behind that is that you have to search to find the lord or lady you'll want to talk to, allowing the player to explore the whole map unobstructed (as opposed to let's say, a single player siege)
The "Secrecy" part of the map is of course the library aspect (as well as the "hidden" lords and ladies I assume). There's a book in a cage, holding the main secret of the library, if anyone wants a tiny little backstory.

Because this was originally a Siege idea, there's a siege camp outside the keep. Even after changing to "Castle Keep Interior" I decided to leave it there if anyone was interested in using it as a siege nontheless.
It shouldn't bother too much if it's used as any other mission type, but it can of course always be removed if necessary. The landscape is pretty neutral around that area so it's just a matter of deleting props if the siege camp has to go.

I have only placed the AI mesh in the building itself and not the surrounding nature. I think that should do for most mission templates. If not, I'm willing to add the AI mesh for the outer part if anyone wants to use it as a single player siege map or anything else requiring AI mesh outside of the building.

I used multi_scene_4 as a base for making the map, that's "Ruined Fort" - makes it easier for MP testing, I always found it annoying to re-name and look for where to find your map, so.

And of course:

(Give me a "bridge_modular_a" and I'll make you anything. Absolutely love this prop  )

Fantastic work! Yeah, I love that prop, too!

Just a hint: Adding AI mesh to the outer terrain in order to make it usable as a siege map will increase your rating.

Yeah but since I absolutely hate AI meshing, it will ruin my evening, since I only have 4 hours left.
I'll take the hit in rating I think.

The Results Are In

We're at the end of yet another scening contest. Unfortunately we haven't been able to properly organise a playtest this time, however the scenes will certainly be included in the playtest of the next contest for showcasing purposes. They deserve it! Now to the results, a dramatic tie:

1st Place - Akathir's Breddock's Booty Beach - 67/82 points
96D7EFA6B18D4C3EE07FF7DA80C09C91EA6AC3C3
Akathir strikes again! That'd be a fitting phrase for the extraordinary scene Akathir whipped up for this contest. Breddock's Booty Beach is a cozy, charming island full of storytelling details, references, secrets...and sharks. The use of native items to create various pirate and sea life objects is very inventive. Overall a really well planned scene with a consistent
style - says Adorno. Congratulations to Akathir for submitting yet another showcase example of a quality scene!

2nd Place - Akathir's Jungle Grotto - 63/82 points
745CFB2A39CF47F8F73F08E1A4E7B160405D5EBE
The shared second place features another scene by Akathir - the Jungle Grotto. It has a very suitable layout for the contest theme, layers upon layers of a thick jungle maze. The Grotto features the signature Akathir waterfall, and the atmosphere is set brilliantly by the lighting, flora and clever environment composition. Congratulations to Akathir for two excellent submissions!

2nd Place - SageMcQuincy'sThe Library - 63/82 points
Fn6MobS.jpg
The first scene to be previewed during the contest by a new participant, Sage's Library absolutely bedazzled everyone. It features a dramatic scene with the remains of a naval battle, and a keep. Inside the keep however is a perfectly seamlessly integrated library. The library itself is a stunning work of native prop combination, one that must've taken a huge amount of time, effort and careful designing. Congratulations to SageMcQuincy for his first entry and the second place!

Honourable Mention - Proton's Nord Hideaway - 50/82 points
D8652F98158045B2D25401A5EBA2502E48EB751F
Proton's Nord Hideaway is a complex, multi-layered secret village location. It's an interesting and engaging exploration experience, lacking just a little bit of end polish to tie it with the other submissions. Nevertheless, it's an excellent secret place that could also serve the purpose of a normal secluded village. Big thanks to Proton for the effort!

Afterword

Big thanks to everyone who took part in the organization and implementation of this contest. Big thanks to the judges Adorno, Alpha and InVain who reviewed the submissions. Huge thanks to NPC99 who has provided the 60€ donation pool. Once again, our apologies for not holding a playtest this time. The submissions on this contest will be included in the next contest's playtest so that everyone can get a chance to enjoy them. Now it's up to modders to utilise these secret places!

Winners, contact William for your prize.

I totally disagree with the results. Congratulations nonetheless!

That library was absolutely stunning and creative, i think we can all agree that based only on the interior, SageMcQuincy would absolutey deserve the first place.
The surrounding terrain would have needed a bit more love, but i understand he didn't want to place too much props in order to keep the filesize relatively low.
Congratulations anyway, the bridge_modular_a opens up a whole new world before the scening community!

I hope the next scening contest will be something more "popular" like castles or towns, that is what is the more needed as OSP and somehting more "abordable": as a noob scener i was like ""secret places" hummm oh ok i give up". These scenes are wonderful but not many will use these.

In case anyone's interested, here's my sheet. Turns out it reflects the overall outcome pretty well. But of course, I don't know the other judge's evaluation nor what they focused on.
