OK something that bothered me on the original two[or three games] was that even if you make your own kingdom, you can not create your own troop tree in-game. So that when you recruit recruits you can choose whether to take them as faction based or personal based or possibly even mercenaries. And when you recruit personal troops you can create the troop tree based on weapons and armor you can choose between and in the beginning of this you can barely choose weapon and armor group. As you go up you can choose weapons and armor more clearly.

Recruit[cloth armor, farm tools, weak shields]
Footman[Padded cloth armor, leather armor, weak sword, weak shields]
Skirmisher[Weak bow, skirmishers sword, leather armor]
Light horseman[Fast horse, leather armor, horse bow, two bondikk arrows, sword]
Mounted knight[Armored horse, medium plate armor, lance, shield, hand and a half sword or two handed sword]
Dismounted knight[Medium plate armor, hand and a half sword, shield]
Archer[Longbow, two arrows, archers sword, heavy leather armor]
Guardsmen[Heavy plate, two handed long axe, or hand and a half sword with a shield]
Siege archer[Light chain mail, siege bow, 2 bondikk arrows, two handed war scythe]

This is just an idea of what I might have done mine. Does not fill up the actual troop tree if I remember it as I have not played in some time.

It'd be cool if the player could make his own troops by buying armor and weapons of the player's choice. In the Party menu, the player would be able to press a button to create a new troop, name it etc. Then assign the armor and weapons.

To avoid the troops being overpowered, if the armor and weapons were better than some specific number, the player would have to keep buying the same armor and weapons to get more of that troop.
