Max Army Size and Morale - Easy to change in scripts.txt

Users who are viewing this thread

I don't like limiting the amount of units you have, I think that should be determined by how much you can pay them. It is almost impossible to support a 1000 man army (with good units, about 25000 a week!)
And I dislike food, who wants to keep 20 items of food in their inveontory?
And with morale, bigger armies tend to feel safer. But if you lose a serious battle morale losses should be devastating...

This is a really awesome post.  I could only read to about page 6 so I hope this has not been covered.. But it would be really great if someone could make a mod out of this to cover Troop size, Food, Moral and there pay.  Or even a zip with the files that need to be changed.  I am assuming all this works with the newest version as well.  I think something that made each food group have about 5 times as much to it would be great and make the price between two and three times as much. Perhaps, Even have a "Food Wagon" that could follow you or something like that.. I think that would be a bit harder to do but would be very cool. Then anything for moral.  I agree with the person who said "Safety in numbers" but im not sure how well that would work with the game.  The pay, I'm not sure about.  You don't expect a army of 300 to be dirt cheap.. But you need to be able to keep up with the pay with what you can make in the game.  Maybe being able to support an army of 300 by having a few castles and some towns..  But then you would have to go to each town.. What if once a week the money from your towns was just given to you, no matter where you are.  Getting it just before you have to pay your troops would be wonderful.. I don't know how hard that would be to do though.  If all this could be put in to one mod or something where you just overwrite the files I think it would be very very popular. I hope someone works on something like this.  It is well out of my league to do anything like this.  I killed the game last night trying to install a mod that had an installer with it.  Now I am reinstalling.   Opps.
I suggest trying the mod Sword of Damocles (link in my sig)
It has an awesome kingdom management system.
You get all money from all of your fiefs by visiting ONLY 1. Also, if you have conquered a whole faction you have get enough money every week to support 500 man armies. (had all of the rhodoks, was paying 7500 a month for 1500 units in garrisons and 100 super good units in my army, and was getting 10000-13000 a week for an earning of 3000-5000)
You can also create patrols (tell units to become patrol, act like lords, you can tell them to do stuff, give them units) and tell them to follow you. You could have 5 patrols of 100 units... as long as you can support 100 units. (they are limited by the amount you can have, if u can have 100 so can each patrol)
I would suggest changing the food though as that is always annoying...

This is one of the mechanics that I dislike the most.  My solution was to change it so that party size only had a negative morale hit if your party was higher than your leadership (plus bonus from heroic followers) permitted.  The max party size was higher than you could effectively lead, but it was ok if you were say going to pick up troops and go right into battle.

I disagree pretty strongly that more troops should be lower morale, which is why I changed it.  Things like having ale/wine giving more morale, letting troops pillage boosting morale, resting in/near towns.

It's easy to fix it to something that's playable and sensible.

Yep, the whole crux of it is the morale grind takes so much from the mid and late game play...if I hadn't found this tweak I probably would have put up M&B for good.

Nox...good to see ya.

I got the sword of Damocles Mod and its working and everything. I just got a few questions.  You talked about having huge army's.  Is that something that comes with this mod or did you have to change that your self with what is said on the rest of this post?  Is there anything else I should do besides food to make this mod like what you were talking about? Thanks.

I modded M&B (Bandit King)

I made it so you could have a much larger army than you could reasonably support - at the cost of morale.  This was so that you could taken men on and swell ranks, etc.

I'm getting ready to port it to 1.11, mainly so *I* can play it =) (but I'll let ya'll play it too)

Also, I found it very desirable to fight larger battles with the battle sizer, which overcomes hardcoded limitations in the battle size slider.  With armies of 400 dudes, the way reinforcements work makes the player have to 'game' the system in a very lame way, IMO.

I will have to for sure get that from you. Thanks... All this time i didn't understand what people meant by the battle size.. I thought it was talking about how big the map is.. but I guess it is talking about how many troops can be out there.. thats great.

I changed the max party size calculations, and the morale calculations.

I made it so that morale tended to drift towards a factor of (your leadership + the benefit of your followers + bonuses) - (various cohesion issues)

gradual bonuses are things like

- having beer in inventory
- resting in or near a friendly city
- resting in camp

immediate bonuses are :

- allowing troops to pillage (reduces income)
- military victories

Moderating morale becomes one of the factors in my mod, during the midgame.  The player can maintain a force as large as he can feed, but he'll have to be feeding them well, keeping them in stock of beer and wine, and being on the winning side as well as the occasional looting and pillaging.

The challenges become moderating the hits you take from doing things to keep your numbers up, with being hated too much by the regular kingdoms.  You can read about it in the Bandit King forum, and I'm looking for some discussion about which features to keep for the 1.0+ port.

Nox, have you looked at native expansion mod? It seems to me it has most of the kingdom management features and freedom you were aiming for with BK. I added several of the tweaks (in my own personal version), including the party moral and size tweak to make it even better.

I can't seem to get my max party size over 90, no matter what I do. I had the first script set as 9999, 9999, 1, and it didn't work. So I changed it to 50, 50, 5, and it still doesn't work.

Running 1.011 btw.

That is odd...I'm up to 142 with only 5 leadership but somefink like 800 renown. Try export char, modify that txt file so that you have super high renown and see if your party size goes up. If not, you have something broke.

Ok this doesn't make sense:

I go the message "your party size exceeds your leadership skill" and all my guys left and I'm alone in a castle I just took!

Again, the two red numbers are what you can change. The 3 is the amount of morale that "hero" troops negate (not including you, as of 1.003). You can set this to 1 to make you and your companions only subtract 1 morale, or 0 for none at all. The second number (default 7) is how much morale leadership gives as a bonus. You can set this as whatever you want, I set mine at 30 so with 10 leadership I get a 300 morale bonus and can lead very large armies without horrible morale problems like the npcs. You could set it even higher.

TML, you are an absolute scripting god....  I bow down in supplication before you /bow

Quick question on this one.  If I set the "hero" morale hit to a negative number (eg -1 or -2) would that result in companions boosting morale simply by being in the party?

So...does this tweak only increase the number of troops you can have or does it also increase the number of the types of soldiers I can have?

I hae it when I can't upgrade soldiers because there's no more "slot."

Is there a tweak where i can change the base moral ??  So far it makes my leadership have 3000 moral.  Also is there currently a tweak that when i recruit prisoners that gives 0 moral penalties ??

Nice information here.
Got myself The eagle and radiant cross mod and was little suspicius will it work as mods as well ....Well guess what it all works exept prison management....

(By meaning all i mean increasing food quanities , increasing party limit, and better morale)

But it would also be great if someone find a way to increase maximum slot capacity. For i have about 10 lords in my army and quite mixed army and for that reason its very hard for me to get more than 200 troops.

For those who recomend that i use 4,5 type of troops i say right now that i dont want to do that way for i like my mixed force (mostly cavalary , byt al sorts of cavalary  cuirassiers , uhlans, stradietos, bermaniese mounted crossbowmans and so on)

I would be really thankful if someone could help with that for i need more troops (i am in the middle of war with the vaegirs and swadians, conquered Nords heroically (but lacking mans to but in towns and castles as well))
