Marshall Term Limit?

Personally I'm not sure as I once lost it without loosing a battle (2 days after the rebellion succeeded) but a NPC lord looses the title after he looses a battle.

I'm pretty sure you lose it if you lose a battle, but I remember reading that there's a choice made every 3 months. Where that was, and how accurate it is, I can't say.

I think therees a time limit.

I do know that if an NPC marshal loses, he loses the marshalship.  However, I'm not sure how it works with players.  It's possible that you would retain marshalship if there is different code involved.

As for the time check, HugoC is correct in that if a marshal retains command for a certain period of time, a new election for marshal is held (3 months sounds about right, but I don't know the true number for sure.)  That said, if you have the marshalship, you probably have enough renown to nominate yourself for said election and win it, so for the player the marshalship can run as long as you like as long as you don't lose (and maybe longer, depending on the answer to the above part.)

Eventually your time as Marshall will come up, even if you don't take a loss -- I've had it happen. You can either let the King know that you're interested in serving as Marshall, or you can back away and claim you're too busy. Of course, if you do this then a douchebag AI Lord will once again be in charge, accomplishing the incredible feat of athleticism known as "running around in circles with his head up his ass".

On the other hand, that can be amusing to watch if you're feeling sadistic.

And it does offer opportunities for independent action... Or it would if you were actually required to do anything as Marshal. King should set a target when he makes you Marshal: "Bring me the keys to Praven" or "Bring  me King Harlaus in chains"

****.... if I could capture a Lord. You would think that after i defeat 8 lords in one battle, personally knocking each one unconcious that i would walk out of there with someone in chains...

Given that they usually have a chance of 80% to escape you either have to keep trying or change the chance of escape using TheMageLord's tweaks.

I wish it was possible to renounce the title of marshall, or give it directly to the king. Usually I'm doing free-roaming, and I rarely take castles, I'm only tempted if I see one guarded with some 50-100 men. So my faction gets quite isolationist after some time, as there is no warmongering marshall with some 1000 men under his command to do all the castle-taking. I never lose a battle (I would rather reload), so I keep being the marshall until I quit playing..

You don't need 1000 men to take a castle. 50 Huscarls 75 Sergeants or 100 Lancers will take a castle. 100 Huscarls will take a city.

If you want to resign, pick a fight with something you can't hope to beat. Only take your companions. Leave any spare kit or food in one of your chests. Suck up the couple of days being dragged around and pay the ransom if you aren't lucky enough to escape. It's not losing if you aimed to do that, and worth it if you really hate being marshal.

Or just ignore the job. NPC Marshals are chicken anyways.

By the "1000 men" line (I might be exaggerating it a little bit..) I was implying that the AI doesn't take castles unless it has a big advantage in numbers, so when there's no marshall, there are no big war parties with multiple lords, so no castles/towns are being taken. My lords do besiege castles every now and then - some of my viking fellas besieged Yalen (450 men) with a 100 men party just recently, but the AI eventually backs down.
I just want the AI to do all the castle-taking now, and leave me to my own business, because while being the marshall, I sort of feel responsibility to keep crushing our enemies, taking up territory - stuff the marshall is supposed to do. I feel like I've got to represent lol, but I just don't enjoy castle sieging as much - defending is way more fun, plus beating the enemy lords gets quite boring after a while, simply because of the fact they recover so quickly, keep coming at you over and over again. It's about time MANPOWER was introduced
Next time I play I'm just going to pass on becoming the marshall altogether, though the position does offer some advantages ^^

IME, if there isn't a PC Marshal being actively aggressive, it doesn't matter how big the war parties are, nothing much changes. And it soon changes back.

I'd be prepared to accept a verrrrry low level of castle-taking, then.

For my part, I like being marshal because when I'm not, I feel the obligation to respond to summonses by the ****-useless appointed NPC Marshal, and end up following him around for ages, failing to get into any fights or assault any fortifications, and that just costs me money and morale. When I'm Marshal, I can set up patrols to try and keep areas free of brigandage, and choose when to fight and when to attend to matters of economics. I can also tell suckas to stop sieging a city I want to take on my own and then claim off the King  Not that they'll succeed, you understand, but just in case...

I've very rarely had to defend a castle, but that's cos I seek open field battles; I'm sure I could've rolled into the castle instead of scaring/luring the investing force away, splitting it up and defeating it in detail. I ended up in a couple of castle defenses early on in my career, and remember being a bit pissed off at the results, so I've avoided them since.

Build a prisoner tower and lock 'em up forever. It'll cost you Honour, but nobody knows what that does anyway.

And for this time, rest assured that you'll be allowed to step down at some point if you can't bring yourself to throw a battle.
