Sir Gallant 说:
By the "1000 men" line (I might be exaggerating it a little bit..) I was implying that the AI doesn't take castles unless it has a big advantage in numbers, so when there's no marshall, there are no big war parties with multiple lords, so no castles/towns are being taken.
IME, if there isn't a PC Marshal being actively aggressive, it doesn't matter how big the war parties are, nothing much changes. And it soon changes back.
I just want the AI to do all the castle-taking now...
I'd be prepared to accept a verrrrry low level of castle-taking, then.
...leave me to my own business, because while being the marshall, I sort of feel responsibility to keep crushing our enemies, taking up territory - stuff the marshall is supposed to do.
For my part, I like being marshal because when I'm not, I feel the obligation to respond to summonses by the ****-useless appointed NPC Marshal, and end up following him around for ages, failing to get into any fights or assault any fortifications, and that just costs me money and morale. When I'm Marshal, I can set up patrols to try and keep areas free of brigandage, and choose when to fight and when to attend to matters of economics. I can also tell suckas to stop sieging a city I want to take on my own and then claim off the King

Not that they'll succeed, you understand, but just in case...
...I just don't enjoy castle sieging as much - defending is way more fun...
I've very rarely had to defend a castle, but that's cos I seek open field battles; I'm sure I could've rolled into the castle instead of scaring/luring the investing force away, splitting it up and defeating it in detail. I ended up in a couple of castle defenses early on in my career, and remember being a bit pissed off at the results, so I've avoided them since.
...plus beating the enemy lords gets quite boring after a while, simply because of the fact they recover so quickly, keep coming at you over and over again. It's about time MANPOWER was introduced
Build a prisoner tower and lock 'em up forever. It'll cost you Honour, but nobody knows what that does anyway.
Next time I play I'm just going to pass on becoming the marshall altogether, though the position does offer some advantages ^^
And for this time, rest assured that you'll be allowed to step down at some point if you can't bring yourself to throw a battle.
