Marshal Or Not to marshal?

Hey I was wondering what you thought on being a marshal, or not. I mean the plus side is that you are much better at in general, you have common sense and know that it's okay to let a village on the other end of the world burn, so that you can capture a town/castle or break a siege. But the down side is that anything you capture won't get a decent garrison, unless it is awardeded to you, and even then it wont get an instant decent garrison like the AI marshal gives, which leaves them open to attack from small enemies, often a single lord with untrained troops can take it back, unless you constantly patrol captured fiefs. So I was wondering how you guys deal with this whole issue? I think this should be patched so that AI players give a small number of troops to fiefs they help capture, as with the AI marshal, but until then.....

That isn't really the biggest issue of being Marshall, though it's somewhat annoying. You can easily order some strong Lords to stay in that town, or patrol around it. The big issue of being Marshall is that you build up Controversy, which is a major barrier in getting fiefs or a wife. Due to that fact smart players usually deny Marshallship, unless they already have enough fiefs and a wife or don't care about them. Only take Marshallship if you have the interest of the realm at heart, not if you are thinking of your own interest.

This. I say if you're in about midgame, where you can have 140+ people in your party (and are married and well off fief-wise), take the position. Also, be ready to burn through a lot of men to supply the fiefs you are capturing. I usually make campaigns that take two or three castles/towns at a time, and once the campaign is over I send additional men to the recently captured garrisons (Diplomacy, for all you native players.)

Yeah I've got 136 and a wife and a fair few fiefs, so I might go for marshalship next time, I just wanna see the Nords burn . Yeah I wanna see the khergits win the realm so I guess I'll just have to ask for ownership for the places I capture, so I can make sure they are well garrisoned

Being marshall has its benefits no doubt, though personally, i refuse it all the time. I usually let the realm burn so that i can recapture later, or if one of my towns/castles is the one getting besieged, i simply bring my 120-150+ army to break the siege. If the besieging army is too big (1400-1500+) i ask a couple fellow lords to follow me with 'may i suggest a course of action?' But overall, i always refuse it. It may also be that after being monarch several times, you lose interest in the roleplay factor of being marshall.
