Should Sicily and Asia Minor be included? That means Persia as a possible faction.

So this is the covered area for the moment.

The initial factions:

The State of Lacedaemon
The Athenian Empire
The Independent City-States

The Boeotian League (might be allocated under the pelop league / lacedaemon)
The Tessalian League

The Thracian Tribes
The Scythian Raiders

The Persian Empire **

The City of Crete / Syracuse / Corcyra / Corinth/ Argos ***

** Not decided yet
*** These may or may not be individual factions.

Shoot your two cents at will, I'll be working on the map and fetching my old references while checking the thread.

EDIT:

The new map will be designed with the ship combat system in mind. I will make another thread about it.

Don't bother about the terrain and shore mistakes its just a 5 min color sketch.

Apennine peninsula seems to be disproportioned.
other than that, you will really need a naval system to make the alpha playable. looking at this map, i'd probably change my vote from "more factions" to "naval system"

That's the point. It would be possible for athens to be the maritime strength while sparta would prevail on land. It would be more realistic and true to history that way. Easier said than done, though, I'll have to sink my head into that system later on to make it stable and functional.

I personally wouldn't include syracuse. Yes, it would be nice but it's not really worth having to have a much bigger map with much more water etc.

I wouldn't like to see the Persian Empire in either...  Rather Corinth and Argos.

Maybe Make the Athenian troops on ships  3x's as strong as another fleet...While Spartan foot armies are 3x's as strong as another foot army :?:

1 Spartan Army= 3 Athenians etc
1 Athenian fleet= 3 spartan fleets etc

Keep the opinions flowing and don't forget to vote, guys. I need a good perspective of demand before putting it to action.

Voted, btw can you pls do not put too much times on Sea battles?
It's cool and all, but with several attempts from many modders, it doesnt look much functionable at all: the ships are auto-moving, the sails are dead, the AI flocked on 1 side of the ships & jumping like rabbits but not crossing the ships, "only" standing animation available for ship battles, no ramping b.w ships, etc.
It's fun and exiciting to see a new thing in M&B, but it's not actually THAT great to play with
Though, this's overall M&B engine limitation to sea battles.
Even with Empire TW million $ investment, sea battle's still crappy though

My proposal is:
Make "sailing/docking" features
Adds several historical-accuracy ship models to purchase with different speeds / boarding capability /                  armor-sea weapons-ramp to purchase/use (there's a Starwar Caldaria Mod code they made for space traveling, u can ask HokieBT for helps if u want)
Use auto-resolve to fight sea battles, with possible of adding tactical choices from menu. Can auto-resolve code can be altered to add more elements of ship strength & abilities into sea battles?

If you're able to make the game use the new auto-resolve code in sea battles it could.

But I think Lynores should have a look into naval battles himself and decide if it's worth all the trouble or not. And if full naval battles can't be implemented, I'd rather like to see a possibility of deciding a tactic, then a calculation of what happened before the boarding started and then letting the player fight in the boarding battle.

I'd like to see sea battles if it was done properly. Currently sea battles are pretty weak and bug filled - if you think it will spoil the game then miss it out IMO.

I'll work on a system with functional sailing, ramming and docking. If it gets too buggy I might try something along what Soil suggested. If it spoils the game, then I it won't make it to the alpha, of course. Either way, keep voting please, so I can get a grasp of what people like the most.

Hmm, Im happy your putting effort into it. Is there any way to implement the burning arrows mod into sea battles?

I think adding Persia would be good.  Definitely expands the scope of the game.  Plus they will be a fun faction to conquer.  I think all the comments tied to ship warfare will be a fantastic improvement on the game as well.

I just found this one and I like it, personally.

750px-Map_Peloponnesian_War_431_BC-fr.svg.png

The map covers a similar area at the moment, and I'm trying to use as much density and size as possible.

The whole map sections is pretty much what I had in mind for factions:

Athens and Allies (The Athenian Empire / The Delian League)
Sparta and the Peloponnesian League / The State of Lacedaemon
The Neutral Greeks / The Independent City-States
Persian Empire
Kingdom of Macedonia

plus

Thracians (faction)
Illyrians (as raiders or as a faction)
Scythians (raiders probably)

PS:

Some of the neutral greeks might be disassembled due to their importance and to prevent the neutral faction from accumulating many towns)

My understanding is shaped almost completely by Barry Strauss and VDH, but I was under the impression that the Syracusan campaign was tied for second in importance in deciding the war of attrition (plague first, then the naval casualties during and after Syracuse)  I guess I feel like Syracuse almost has to be a factor, although I'd probably set up Carthaginian party spawns on Sicily to keep them appropriately distracted.  I realize that's a LOT of work, so I'll be happy to accept a compromise where it's not possible to make that mistake.  I'd just like the chance to see if I can pull off such a huge gamble.

Good news. I've managed to tweak native's settings and thought of a workaround to its limits and the map turned out larger than expected (needed even). It covers the area seen in my last post above and its far from a strategy game map. I guess I should be glad for losing the original.

Sweet. That map is huge. Looks as though naval warfare will play a key part in the mod.  I am looking forward to it.
