Map Guidance needed

Been a bit of a struggle getting started with map editing, but I am finally off the blocks and running...I am just not getting the results I want.

Using Thorgrim's editor, plus the Warband tool to make it easier to operate. Had to go back and reinstall M&B to make it work, but the tutorials out there guide you pretty much down the straight and narrow.

Have worked out how to get the map output size varied my moddng the text file in the editor to define the output size, which has got the 'yellow' border sitting where I want it, so the areas I want are reachable.

Not sure on a few things though:

1) What effect does the actual size of the heightmap and _c files have? The final map size is determined elsewhere in the editor...so is ther ean optimal size for a map? I am using 400x300 becuase the tutorial did....and I would like to know if that's good.

2) Rivers don'e seem to show up right. I am getting odd blocks of river, rather than a river. I am guessing this is linked to 1) and that my river is too skinny on the imported files. It's set to the right colour to be a river, and the editor clearly 'knows' it's a river as it won;t let me manually lower the ground along it. How thick should hte line be on the import files to make an effective river?

So..in short...the tutorials show me HOW to make a map that won;t break the game....but are there any guidelines on what makes an EFFECTIVE map? Search yields me nothing...
Happy to do the trial and error thing if I have to and share the results if others would benefit.

PS: There was another one that generated the mesh from a Terragen-like program, used a decimation modifier to make the topology usable and converted it to our beloved format. But I can't find it so easily.

Ahh....how did I miss that one
