I just started with a new character and took some of those to my band. Are they of any good if upgraded to the top?

Personally I think Manhunters are useless except for cannon fodder. Depending on your needs you are better off training Peasant Women up to Sword Sisters and/or Vaegir of Swadian Peasants to Knights. These troops (Sword Sisters/Knights) are both mounted, can take a beating and they can stand up to most enemies. Personally I like some ranged troops as well and nothing seems to beat the Swadian Crossbowmen trained up to Sharpshooters in this area.

Note that it can take a while before these troops will be at their highest level, so either have a Hero with high training skill and/or try and get a higher level unit to start out with like Vaegir/Swadian Militia rather then peasants. As there will be casualties during the painfull process of gaining experience you might prefer the Knights over the Sword Sisters. You can hire Peasants/Militia in any City's Tavern but Peasant Women can only be liberated from enemy parties.

At the top level (slaver chief) manhunters are hardly any stronger than they were at the bottom level, except now they have a mail hauberk. Probably the worst unit in the game, even bandits are better.

They do have blunt weapons though, so makes for more captives, meaning more money and an easier time with "catch-the-noble" quests.

They arent really that good though.

I agree but sometimes that's why I recruit them: it adds to the variety of my combats having different allies and I try to sometimes play as if I were only a slave trader.

I always help manhunters

As do I. They need it.

I think Armagan hasn't really finished 'fleshing out' the higher manhunter levels, since they are identical.
