Managing your kigndom is hard

Knight at Arms
This game was played with diplomacy mod, my character was a single non noble woman.

After several days playing as mercenary (about 700) I finally feel that was the right moment to start my own kingdom. I conquered a small castle to sarranids surrounded by Veagirs lands. I proposed the peace to sarranid if they give me another castle. They accepted.

When created my kingdom I selected the domestic policies which give relations bonus with my lords despite earning less money, I supposed that most of them will be happy.

After a while my castle was full of nobles that wanted to join to my kingdom I accepted immediately, it looked as a nice option to easy expand my kingdom. Without any other fight I added two towns and a few castles more to my lands.

More and more nobles come to my "house" so I could deploy a good kingdom army about 800 men. All the time I was training top tier troops to have a good reserve.

Later on sarranids declared the war again, I conquered another town and defeated many of their armies, it might sound that I was on the right path with 3 towns, about 8 castles and many villages under my crown but I didn't feel it.

The problem was that my "kingdom" was really scattered around the map, accepting any Lord that came to me granted lands around all Calandria. My army can protect it, so I really didn't know what to do, there wasn't a clear front line, I though that if I keep attacking I will force enemy to retreat to protect their home lands. Even with this tactic my kingdom’s villages were raided often.

Not sure why but some of my Lords started to hate  me even before the war started despite my domestic policies but it went worse after the firsts fights, when I tried to ask them why they didn't tell me a clear reason through the dialogs so I didn't know what to do. Also I feel absolutely ridiculously that I have to go to the other corner of the map to ask someone why is he annoyed when the sultan army was knocking at my castle doors.

I had free fiefs to grant but it was a bit chaotic knowing which lords currently have lands and which not. I check it at the notes screen but due the continuously new lords arriving it was a hard to keep the track without a lot micromanaging.

Also my minister didn't tell me all the unassigned fief, she just give me the option to assign the next one. So it was a bit harder to plan a good distribution. Also I wanted to consider the Lords opinion but check it one by one was a nightmare.

Perhaps it was due my lack of experience, I always played as vassal but I feel that I hadn't the right tools to manage the kingdom, I missed for example:

* A screen (similar to the kingdoms relations of the diplomacy mod) were you can check all your lords in one view, their relation with you, why is he going happy/unhappy, their fief, their army, etc, to avoid losing time at the notes screen or asking to your minister.

* A screen which summarize your kingdom, fiefs-owners, fiefs free.

* Being able to sent emissaries to your lords to ask, request things to them without having to go across half map seeking for them.

Maybe is just me which have been overwhelm by all the new task to do, or maybe I am losing some features, so I will appreciate if someone can share some tips.

Finally sorry for the long post.

wait, you actually expected kingdom management to be easy? and made the worst mistake possible when building a kingdom(namely, conquering stuff that is all over the place)? seriously, you should read up on history or economics or what have you before you whine about that kind of stuff.

Hey take it easy bro, they are learning, i learned how to control my kingdome through trial and error. Ok one. when you first start out make sure you have the  strongest town or castle. try and make peace with everyone as early as possible. Stockpile you towns or castles with alot of troops. (start with  a strong foundation and the house wont fall) so for example a castle should have maybe 50-100 elite troops but 200-300 recruits (they are cheap and AI look at numbers when deciding on castles). Towns should be 100-150 elite with 350-400 recruits. After your fiefs are secure work on your army (peace is really important since you need alot of money and your going to depend on enterprises for a while). Once your army is strong get ONE lord maybe TWO at most. Work on thier armies give them so villages and money. (when placing your kingdom try to have your back to a friendly AI faction or the corner of the map i like starting at teh veiger  corner so i can get my fav troops (nords) and fight  veigers and khergits.) Go to war with one faction at a time. As you get bigger get a few more lords work on their armies etc. Take it slow make it strong, keep it condenced. Also if you have high honor stick with high honor lords etc.

I had to learn it absolutely the same way but I don't whine about how the game is hard. It's supposed to be hard, and knowing your history before you try to play king is always a good idea.

some ppl  learn differently, you learned through history, i made a super powered cheat charector and started a kingdom on day 1 than saw how things worked  before starting it on my non-cheat nomral char (hes on day 125 and im still havent started yet

If you want better relation with your lords, gather them for a feast and after stock piling your household with what is needed fill the rest with ale. Then use the relation guy in your court and send ale as "gift" to the lords you want good relation with. Try and bring all of them to friendly status at least, then build on that and keep going.

One of the good thing about being a sovereign is that you don't care about controversy. So even if you have lords with land at the other side of the map, you don't actually have to go and defend it. Just let the enemy take it over while you focus on conquering the same kind of fief next to your territory. When the time is right just give that newly aquired fief to the lord that lost his at the other side of the map; problem solved. Don't bother to leave too many unassigned fief around, it doesn't influence the recruitment rate that much. Just assign what you have and leave 1 or 2 village up for grab from your next land grabbing campaign.

I normally only assign 1 castle + joined village to lords. Unless they have a lot of renown ( 800+) then I might give them a town if they don't piss me off too much. Everything else just give to yourself. MOAR MONIESS!

Edit : Oh yeah and if your relation with said lord is too bad for them to come to your feast just send a messenger ordering them to follow you on the field, then wait for them to come to you. When they get close to town start sending gift of ale and watch the line up of caravans go towards him hehe.

VERY GOOD advice...I couldnt have put it better myself. Also please keep in mind a_ver_est that ludial is right about kingdom running being hard. It's a hard thing to do, and most likely, the reason why the lords you have get mad at you is becaue they are power-hungry and want more land and are mad when ou give land to other lords. Have you every tried to get all the "compainions" in the game? It is the same B.S.....not all people get along...simple as that.
Regards ) and best wishes!
