Good luck. I'm in school, but i'm locked into a math/science course now, and i'll probably do engineering, which kinda is annoying, because i wouldn't mind doing some ITS.

CPU: Dualcore will become more and more important with each new game released, so you should get an AMD64 X2 3800+ (1 MB L2 cache/core), or a 4400+ (2 MB L2 cache/core) if you can afford it
(i have no idea how much you can get for 2000 australian dollars).

Motherboard: 1 PCI-e slot and 2-3 PCI slots are the most important thing here, and of course it has to be socket-939. DON'T get an SLi mobo, as the the 30-50% performance increase isn't worth the cost of two GPUs.

GPU: PixelShader 3.0 and 256 MB RAM are both important in future games. Currently, the PCI-e Nvidia 6800 GS has the best price/performance ratio.

RAM: Remember that DDR2 RAM won't work with AMD CPUs.
Get 2 x 512 MB if you want a cheap gaming pc, but i recommend getting 2 x 1 GB, it's a very cheap way of future-proofing you pc.

Soundcard: Not really important. Most motherboards have a decent onboard SPU. However, a "real" SPU does give a 10% framerate boost in some games.
